Horizon Series of ICCR begins with vibrant performance of Dogri 'Geetru' | | | Early Times Report Jammu , July 31: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India started its new fortnightly programme 'HORIZON SERIES' at the Auditorium of College for women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. The programme was organised by ICCR in collaboration with Govt College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. The first programme of the series featured vibrant 'Geetru' performances by Romalo Ram and his group. Earlier welcoming the guests Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal Govt College for Women Gandhi Nagar, Jammu underlined the need of cultural education among the students and discussed in detail about the inculcation of values through such initiatives. Thakur the Regional Director of ICCR while introducing ICCR and the Horizon series said that the prime mandate of the council if to bring nations together through cultural initiatives but under the Horizon series, ICCR showcases the best of the local talent. The idea of presenting 'Geetru'- a vibrant traditional performing art form in a highly focussed manner is to take such an important tradition to the younger generations who are not much aware of their own priceless cultural belongings. The challenge before us is not only to preserve these wonderful dying artistic traditions but also to disseminate them in such a respectable manner that people particularly the younger generations start taking proud in them. We cannot blame them about this ignorance of theirs where they have failed to recognise their own being but the responsibility largely lies on the educational and cultural institutions to teach them to respect their own culture and language. He further said that under the Horizon series, the ICCR will put spot light on more such forms and individuals who are engaged in the practice of such magnificent performing traditions. 'Geetru' is a traditional narrative song-dance form in which the lead singer also performs some dance steps and at times also uses the theatrical devices as well. Performed by a group of eight to ten artists in which lead performer is followed by the others as chorus with the accompaniment of a Dholk and a 'Chimta' and powerful group singing. In usual practice this is performed for hours together, narrating incidents, ballads, local stories and effectively holds the interest of the audience. Noteworthy feature of this tradition of performance is that it belongs purely to the Dogras and their ancestors deserve kudos for creating such a wonderful art form which has the immense potential to vibrate the stage. Romalo Ram who literally hijacked the jam-packed auditorium deserves all appreciation and praise for his out of the world performance. For over one and half hour he kept the audience spellbound with his magical presentation and that is the power of purity, originality and rootedness of the performing arts. For years together the imprint which Romalo Ram has left on the young minds through his electrifying performance is going to live as a permanent mark. The prominent personalities who graced the show included Dr. Zahoor-Ud-Din, Dr. Champa Sharma, Janardan Pathania and Bodh Raj. The show was successfully coordinated and managed by Dr. Sudhanshu Sharma. |
