Early Times Report
Jammu, July 31: The armed struggle entered into twenty-fifth year today. It all started on July 31, 1988 when four militants, Mohammad Yasin Malik, Ishfaq Majid Wani, Sheikh Abdul Hamid and Javed Ahmad Mir opened fire on a CRPF vehicle near Bohri Kadal in Old city killing 6 soldiers. Several civilians were also killed in retaliatory fire. The incident caused a stir in the entire Valley. The four men named above became heroes overnight. People would sacrifice anything to have a glimpse of them.
Ishfaq Majid Wani got killed in an encounter near Hawal on March 30, 1990. Sheikh Hamid died in a boat capsize on November 19, 1992. Yasin Malik rose to the level of commander-in-chief of JKLF. Yasin got arrested soon and during Javed Mir's tenure as chief of JKLF, group clashes commenced and claimed hundreds of militants.
When Yasin Malik was released in 1994, the era of militancy was over, at least for the JKLF. He announced ceasefire and turned JKLF into a political party. He continues to hold the post of chairman in the organization to this day.
Javed Mir stayed with Malik for some time. However, he joined JKLF (R) which is now headed by Bita Karatay. He also stands for a political solution to the vexed problem.
Seniors like Azam Inquilabi who preferred to live in the `warmth of icy' Himalayan peaks now talks spirituality and meta-physics. Similarly, Late Sheikh Abdul Aziz, who headed the Al-Jehad also turned a politician after his release from jail. He got killed in 2008.
Tahir Ahmad Mir, the deputy commander-in-chief of Students Liberation Front (SLF) was considered a hard nut. His organization was responsible for kidnapping of Masheerul Haque and Doraiswamy also changed in prison. He too seeks a political solution to the problem.
Mushtaq-ul-Islam who headed the dreaded co-ordination committee of Batmaloo stayed in prison for more than 15 years after his arrest. On his release, he chose to head a version of Muslim League.
Interestingly all the commanders named above barring Azam Inquilabi changed in prison. Azam was never arrested. But he changed nonetheless.
