Delhi giving unflinching support to Omar | Weak Congress, Weak Opposition | | Rustam JAMMU, Aug 1: One can question the political views of senior PDP leader and former Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Kara, but it is difficult to disagree with him when he says that "Delhi has never given such unflinching support to any Chief Minister in Jammu & Kashmir as was given to Omar Abdullah". It is a fact that New Delhi under the present Congress-led UPA dispensation has been giving unstinted and unqualified support to Omar Abdullah ever since January 5, 2009, when the NC-Congress coalition Government was formed. In 2010, there was the possibility of New Delhi showing Omar Abdullah the door. 2010 saw Omar Abdullah abdicating his authority for all practical purposes with extremists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani playing all the shots and setting the agenda. For almost two months it appeared that there was no Government worth its name in place. It was a total collapse. New Delhi did recognize the gravity of the situation in Kashmir. In fact, it censured the Chief Minister in writing. It passed a resolution which held Omar Abdullah responsible for "trust deficit" and "governance deficit", but did not remove him from the office he had not done justice to. New Delhi could not show Omar Abdullah the door for three main reasons. One, Omar Abdullah maintained, and continues to maintain, very good relations with the Congress high command (read Sonia Gandhi's son and Congress's Prime Ministerial candidate Rahul Gandhi). It was Gandhi who had directed New Delhi not to touch Omar Abdullah and said he needed to be given some more time. Two, Sonia Gandhi is neither Jawaharlal Nehru nor Indira Gandhi. Both Nehru and his daughter did commit several blunders in Kashmir by pampering and promoting the controversial Abdullah dynasty, but they also acted when the circumstances so warranted. What they did to Sheikh Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah is history. Sonia Gandhi is made of a different stuff. She doesn't know anything about Jammu & Kashmir. Besides, she is surrounded by a coterie of vested interests, some of them close to the Abdullahs. Three, the Congress-led UPA Government is the weakest, even highly questionable, India has ever seen after 1947. It is difficult to term it as Government. It consists of Ministers and political parties which are acting independent of each other and pulling in different directions. The Prime Minister hardly speaks. He is heading what is termed as by many "the most corrupt" Government. These are the three fundamental factors which have helped Omar Abdullah carry the day. The fourth factor is the inability of the local Congress leadership to assert and demonstrate its authority. It is as weak as the Congress high command and the Congress-led UPA Government. Another factor that has been helping the otherwise highly unpopular State Government is the weak Opposition. |
