Who should apologize publically; NC, PDP? | | | ET Report JAMMU, Aug 1: National Conference (NC) today obliquely accused Congress leadership of hatching conspiracies against Kashmiri leadership and the people of Kashmir. It has asked the Congress leadership to publically apologize to the people of the State for misdeeds. It may come as surprise for many but NC leader Sajjad Shaheen in a handout issued here today while talking about PDP patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said "Mufti Sahib has perhaps forgotten that prior to formation of his party, PDP, he has been all along his political life part of same establishment responsible for hatching conspiracies against Kashmiri leadership and people of Kashmir." Sajjad has taken exception to the sensational revelations made by Mufti that Centre is not allowing strong representative voices to grow in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Now, if the records are to be relied upon, Sajjad is referring to Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's association with Congress till the year 1999 when he formed PDP. He is also talking about Mufti's tenure as Union Home Minister. Sajjad has seemingly not gone to the history books to find out who invoked AFSPA and DAA in Jammu and Kashmir. He has referred to Jagmohan but made no mention of role played by NC in taking the state to the brink of disaster. He has talked about firing on Mirwaiz's funeral procession in which dozens of innocent mourners were gunned down but made no mention of SOG which enjoyed complete impunity during NC's rule. Such is the poor knowledge of Shaheen that he has accused Mufti of conniving with BJP to transfer Muslim Auqaf Trust to Muslim Wakaf Board. This statement is confusing since Muslim Auqaf Trust is an independent institution and has nothing to do with Mufti or someone else from Congress or PDP. Another historical error, which Shaheen has made, is about the operation 'Catch and Kill'. The operation achieved most of its targets during NC's tenure from 1996 to 2002. His statement that PDP got a single opportunity to rule the State and they went on auctioning the forests and State land does not need to be taken seriously since in J&K, even toddlers know who sold the State for personal reasons and became rich overnight. He has further said that PDP Patron appeased BJP by introducing and passing women's citizenship and property transfer bills in the State Assembly. None seems to have briefed Sajjad about these two important bills and NC's role in getting them stalled. He has accused the former Chief Minister of hushing up the corruption cases involving MLAs and Ministers of his Government but said nothing about NC's 24 month old tenure. Then he says that it was during Mufti's tenure when the infamous Srinagar sex scandal was unearthed which involved some of Mufti's own Ministers and MLAs. Here again, factually he has gone miles on the other way around. All the accused were from Congress and presently, NC leaders are patronizing them. Officers involved were those who had very close ties with NC patron Farooq Abdullah. He further said that National Conference is not only "a movement but a history in itself. This may seem to be the only sensible thing that Sajjad has said but instead of using 'is', he should have used 'was' to describe NC. He said like in the past, conspiracies are being hatched to weaken the National Conference in the State and sudden emergence of PDP as a political party was a part of this conspiracy. He forgot who shook hands with BJP first and who called Congressman 'Worms of Gutter'. |
