JAMMU, Aug 1: A lady Assistant Professor of the department of Mathematics in the University of Jammu who had filed a complaint with the Vice Chancellor against a senior Professor and Head of the Department of her own department, who also happens to be the president of the Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) charging that he was teaching at a private tutorial during the university working hours abandoning his own classes in the university, has now charged the same Professor of harassment. A written complaint by the lady Assistant Professor has been marked by the Vice Chancellor to the Dean Academic Affairs who in turn has handed it over to the probe committee.
In her complaint, the lady Assistant Professor has alleged that Prof. Dalip Singh, HoD Mathematics has been mentally harassing her by deliberately depriving her of opportunities of career enhancement and making environment in the department uncomfortable for her, being the lone lady in the faculty of the department. The complainant has in her complaint mentioned that the HoD had blocked every opportunity for her to undergo mandatory courses for her career enhancement, had deprived her of examination duties and even connived with the university authorities to get two posts of Associate Professor in the department converted into Assistant Professor thereby blocking her chance to be elevated to one of those. The complainant has also accused Prof. Dalip Singh of making unceremonious comments in the departmental meetings which hurt the dignity and pride of a woman
Sources in the University divulge that taking strong cognizance of the complaint, the Vice Chancellor Prof. MP Singh Ishar handed over the case to the newly appointed DAA, Prof. Neelam Saraf for ascertaining the facts. "Yes the complaint has been received from the lady Assistant Professor and due to the serious nature of allegations made, the same has been referred to a probe committee comprising senior university professors, which shall verify the issues raised by the complainant," confirmed Prof. Saraf when contacted.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Apex Court in famous Vishakha case has issued guidelines for the heads of the departments in Government institutions to ensure comfortable and congenial working environ for the ladies working in them.
