Traffic lights to become operational from Aug 4 | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 1: Virtually a step towards E-Chalaning, Traffic lights across Jammu city are being made operational from August 4. In the first phase, ten Electric Traffic Signal Lights (ETSL) are being made operational on trial basis and subsequently, traffic situations at various junctions will be surveyed to fix the time accordingly for the signal. This was stated by Inspector General of Police (IGP), Traffic Muneer Khan while addressing a press conference here today. He said that traffic signals are expected to reduce jams, particularly during peak hours at various busy traffic junctions across Jammu city. He informed that Satwari Chowk, Main stop, Gandhi Nagar, Green Belt Gandhi Nagar, Gandhi Nagar Hospital Turning, Bikram Chowk, Jewel Chowk, K C Crossing, Shakuntala Crossing, Medical College Chowk, Ambphalla Chowk, Library Chowk, Parade Chowk are among the 30 locations where traffic lights have been installed in first phase of the project. Of these, the places where places where traffic signals would start blinking from August 4 are Satwari, Bikram Chowk, Gandhinagar, Narwal, Sunjawan, Gangyal, Gandhinagar, Gole Market, Jewel, Panama Chowk, Narwal and Indira Chowk, informed Khan. He stressed that no protected Canal Head Crossing, Bakshi Nagar Pulli, Talab Tillo Chowk, Panjthirthi-Bypass Point, person, police officer, minister, media person or VIP would be allowed to jump the traffic signals. He said that Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Armed and Law and order and ADGP, Security and IGPs have issued necessary instructions to escorts to stop at traffic lights, he said. "Remaining 30 crossings will be taken up under second phase of the project in interior parts of the city," added Khan. He assured that these traffic signals will be supplied with adequate power to direct the traffic movement round the clock. He further said that optical cameras would be installed in the next stage. "This would be followed by e-Challan system, to control the traffic violation in the city. E-Challan system is the system of sending Challan to the violator's home, after the optical camera captures the picture of the vehicle of the violator," added the IG. He said that E-Challan would be possible only after the transport department completes data updating process. Once the data updation is complete, e-challan would be made functional, said Khan. He maintained that till the time, optical cameras are not made functional and date updation is not complete, traffic police would do the job manually. "We have instructed our Jawans to be help people in getting used to this new system of traffic regulation," Khan said.
It may be recalled here that the installation work of the traffic lights was given to Traffic Police initially. They did some work and installed two traffic light booths, one at Bikram Chowk and other at Satwari Chowk. However, for unknown reasons, they abandoned the work and the job was handed over to Jammu Kashmir Housing Board. They too found the project of no interest and returned it to Jammu Municipal Corporation. JMC worked overnight and managed to install 30 traffic lights in the outer Jammu city. Dead line for installation of traffic signal lights and subsequently making them functional in first phase was June 18. Omax Company was given the project for installation of traffic signals in Jammu under the supervision of Jammu Municipal Corporation. |
