Height of negligence on Udhampur route

Sarita Jamwal
UDHAMPUR, Aug 1: To seek copy of any newspaper pricing meagre amount of Rs 2, the Traffic and district police personnel deployed on different link roads within Udhampur district allows overloaded vehicles to ply unchecked thereby putting several precious human lives at risk every day .
Interestingly the modus operandi of the passenger vehicles that ply in wee hours and early morning on different routes in the district is very simple.
They just fetch a copies of different news papers which cost them not more than rupees 50 to 60 and deliver a copy each at every traffic and district police Naka and manage to avoid challan or seizure in lieu of "Gifting the copies of the news papers". Beside this these passenger vehicles also pay hefty booty to police on monthly basis and ply vehicles in mountainous district putting lives of hundreds at risk, alleged Ashok Kumar, a daily commuter.
It is pertinent to mention here that number of major road accidents which took place in past on Udhampur- Ramnagar road taking lives of dozens is result of overloading allegedly allowed by police personnel.
Government employee Sudesh Kumar alleged that there is no rule of law on roads from Udhampur to Ramnagar adding that he is daily commuter from Udhampur to Ramnagar and overloading in buses is such that bus which they board early in morning ply with passengers triple than its capacity endangering lives of people.
Kumar further alleged that there is no traffic checking on a stretch of 37 kilometres between Udhampur to Ramnagar.
He added that the bus drivers are openly resort to overloading by offering free service of delivering copies of newspapers to police officers on daily basis.
The practice of overloading on other links roads such as Pancheri, Majalata, Latti and
Basantgarh is also going on unabated as there is no one to check it and drivers only have only to take care of the needs of police at check posts.
