Border guards asked to carry out recce of entire LoC, IB in J&K | | | early times report Jammu, Aug 2 : Following the detection of a tunnel on the IB in Samba sector, which had been reportedly dug for providing safe passage to the infiltrators, senior functionaries in the Union Home Ministry are said to have suggested to the Army and the BSF to start detailed recce in order to find out if any more tunnels had been dug on the IB and the LoC. Official sources said that the Home Ministry functionaries have also suggested to the BSF and the Army experts to carry out the recce jointly. Sources said that in case there was need for seeking guidance and assistance experts from the Geological Survey of India and those connected with the Department of Geology could be deputed for the job. The Home Ministry officials are of the opinion that the digging of tunnels for allowing safe passage to militants keen to cross into Jammu and Kashmir could undo whatever improvement work is done while upgrading the border fence.Thy said that the Union Home Ministry was sending a team of experts to Israel to study the technique the Israelis had adopted in upgrading and fortifying the border fence which had prvented the Palestinians from infiltrating into the Israeli territory for carrying out acts of sabotage. Official sources said that intelligence sleuths belonging to different central intelligence agencies, including those working in the Military Intellignce, have been asked to renew their contacts with their field sources in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir for finding out if there were other tunnels having been dug on the LoC and the IB. Sources said that detailed survey of the LoC and the IB was needed following reports that agencies across the LoC and the IB were trying to adopt different means, including digging tunnels, for facilitating infiltration of militants into Jammu and Kashmir, after ingress had become a difficult exercise with the fencing of the entire border and with the installation of sensers on the border. They said that finding that border crossing had become quite difficult because of improved border management by the Army and the BSF the Pakistani agencies were trying to f acilitat ingress through tunnels.Between 1989 and 1994 the infiltrators had been given training to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir by going down the snow covered slopes on the border with the help of sledges. Later the infiltrators had been provided with scissors and other inst ruments for snapping the barbed wire fence. At time they had been provided with tall plastic ladders which would help them to jump over the eight feet tall border fence into the Indian territory in Jammu and Kashmir. |
