Kathua becomes safe heaven for drug dealers
`Drugged youth drugged nation'

Kathua, Aug 2: Smack- a deadly drug is fast spreading its tentacles in Kathua. With youth in the age group of 15-25 years falling prey to the drug, the number of addicts has registered an alarming increase.
The locals blame police of inaction. "The inaction of the police encourages the dealers and they are increasing their business', said a concerned local.
Besides smack, opium, cannabis and hashish is sold openly in the district. Robin Sharma, president Sarav Dharma Seva Samiti stressed for bringing a strong and rigorous law for stopping the drugs dealers and also demanded establishment of rehabilitation centre.
The addicts comprise young boys, girls, and women from different family backgrounds. "Drugs and alcohol have taken the toll of our youth in an adverse manner. Young boys take smack, brown sugar, heroin and other contraband drugs, which are spoiling their lives", said a social activist.
Some popular dings consumed by the students are Luminal, Mandrax, Cannabis, E, Heroin and other alcohol-based medicines.
Over the years Kathua has grown considerably especially as a flourishing market for drugs. The drug sellers use the youth as peddlers. Once a young person is caught in this intricate and dangerous racket, he can never get out of the same.
The remedy, according to experts is strong will power. Rehabilitation centers and drug de-addiction centers can also go a long way in eradicating the menace. But before that, the supply of drugs has to be stopped.
In Kathua, drugs are smuggled from across the border. The customs officials seize record quantities of heroin and other drugs but many consignments escape their watchful eyes.
It should be noted that when the young persons take drugs for the first time, they enjoy their influence and a sense of comfort and the usage for a single time leads to drug addiction. The desperate student or young scholar gets the drugs from drug peddlers and organized gangs in Kathua. The victim takes up odd jobs for earning money so that he could buy drugs. He also resorts to stealing from home or gets involved in minor or major crimes with the help of his classmates or other drug-addicted friends. So, he gets completely involved in the drug net and the ultimate result is either a police lock up (due to a crime) or death (due to excessive or long term consumption of drugs).
Experts have urged the parents to keep watch on their wards. "They should watch the activities of their children. If they suffer from breathlessness and prefers to stay in isolation, remains confined to bed and avoids social gatherings, the alarm bells must start ringing. "A drugged youth means a drugged nation and sick nations have no future. We must control and eliminate this menace before it overcomes our youth."
