Act against all unauthorized constructions in Srinagar, Jammu | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 2: The restraint order on a high profile motor vehicle showroom by both the State High Court and the House Committee of the legislature has come handy and in time to preserve the wetlands and agricultural lands in the State which are fast being gobbled up by mushrooming motor vehicle showrooms, workshops, shopping malls and residential houses. The showroom in question belongs to a senior politician, Maulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari and interestingly the majority of the members of the House Committee that cracked the whip on Ansari belonged to his party, the PDP. This proves that the committee had ample legal and constitutional basis to do what it did and at the same time the members of the committee did not falter in their duty towards the people of the State. It did not come in the way of the committee members' discharge of duties whether the showroom in question belonged to a member of the ruling party or their own. The action is fine and the decision is right though slightly overdue. Yet, many questions are now being raised about the legitimacy of hundreds of other similar structures in the Mirgund, Parimpora, HMT, Nowgam and dozens of other areas in Srinagar city and also around Jammu city where unbridled expansion by way of residential colonies, shopping complexes, gas refilling stations etc. have destroyed the greenery and the very lungs of the twin capitals. Needless to add the luxury of constructing structures unauthorized, illegal and brazenly violative of municipal rules has always been the preserve of people with the right political and administrative connections in the State. While nobody wishes to protect the showroom construction made by Maulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari for whom the option of seeking legal remedies lies wide open, the moot point is that nothing should come in the way of ordering similar action for other equally violative constructions in both Srinagar and Jammu cities. A summary look at the outskirts of the twin capitals shocks the viewer. What used to be lofty green and lashing city outskirt is taken over by concrete jungles and slums. Offending sights of makeshift homes by the homeless, huge monoliths of concrete laid senselessly over lands those once provided food for the people of the State have become so common that nobody now seems to even raise an eyebrow over such structures. What used to be lash green fields of wheat and rice are now dotted with pools of used motor engine oil and foul smelling garbage. The State Government is obviously finding it very difficult to arrange funds for reconstruction and development, but to ensure that the grandeur and beauty of our cities and villages do not get destroyed forever, it does not need money. All it needs is the will to act, the time for which is now. |
