Attempts being made to provoke people again: IGP
'Kashmir not a criminal society; people unwilling to follow Hurriyat diktat'

early times report
Srinagar, Aug 3: Justifying the frequent house detentions of the Hurriyat leaders, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Range, S M Sahai today said that "certain elements" were hell bent to foment trouble in valley.
"But unwillingness of people to fall prey of such designs helped police to maintain calm in the valley. Various attempts were made to provoke people even the shrines were torched and sectarian cards played to create trouble. But people were alert and so was the police," Sahai said.
He maintained that the Police would not allow anybody to create law and order problem and will take every possible step to 'thwart' such designs.
"If you allow separatist leaders to address the public that will definitely be followed by stone pelting incidents which can not be permitted at any cost," the IGP asserted, adding that if they (separatists) want to go outside for some 'good cause', no body would stop them.
Accusing Hurriyat leaders of misleading the youth, Sahai said, "During 2010 agitation, one of the top separatist leaders was on record as having said that he holds movement dearer than the education of the youth."
According to Sahai such statements were the 'eye opener' for the parents who want a better future for their wards.
He said that Police was always there to help people "but that should not be taken as only the police was responsible to rectify every bad thing in the society."
"We can't use batons every time. Kashmir is not basically a criminal society. But the generational gap and the losing control of the parents over their children has resulted in an increase in the criminal activities," he said. "If as a society you don't wake up to the alarming call, nobody can come to your rescue."
Referring to recent Shopian incident, the IGP claimed that the things were blown out
of proportion in the media which was unfortunate.
"The deceased had himself recorded his statement in presence of his relatives, but unfortunately a section of media did not carry the police statement."
The IGP claimed that some people do not want peace to prevail and "were hell bent to create an environment of confrontation between public and the forces."
"There are sometimes governance issues and people come on roads. We as a reacting agency have to act. What is unfortunate is that nobody will thereafter highlight their (people's) demands, but the police action," he rued, adding that people have to understand that Police has to maintain law and order and for this it will swing its arms if things do not fall in line smoothly.
Sahai while denying that there was an increase in the militancy related incidents, said, "The graph has gone down as compared to last year but yes this is the season of such activities and people will try to create trouble."
While expressing his anger over the parents for what he said leaving their children unattended, Sahai revealed that the grande thrower in Sopore has been identified as 12 year old boy. "What would you do to a 12 year kid who targets you with such lethal weapons," asked Sahai.
He said this was the duty of the parents to keep a vigil on their children.
Sahai while refusing to check the corruption in police overnight said, "This is an inherent problem and needs some time to eradicate it completely from the system."
