Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 3: In a show of empowerment at the grassroot level in Jammu villages, Sarpanches of Jammu rural today sought removal of acting Principal of Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Jammu Dr. Anees Choudhary.
Sarpanches of Jammu rural, united under banner of newly constituted ‘MahaPanchayat’ served an ultimatum to the state government, threatening to lock-up Principal’s room and stage Dharna outside it. Reason: People at the grassroot level i.e. in villages of Jammu rural have been facing worst kind of treatment at the hands of acting Principal of Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Jammu.
They agitated it with their representatives at the local level. They told their Sarpanches that they have to pay underhand for tests and others necessary things. They also alleged harassment and humiliation. They reportedly told the Sarpanches that the acting Principal has been openly extorting money without any fear of getting caught.
Since rural areas are heavily dependent on GMCH, Sarpanches led by General Secretary of MahaPanchayat Subhash Sharma today held a press conference wherein they demanded immediate removal of Dr. Anees Choudhary. They said that an uncanny situation has got created in Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Bakshi Nagar due to acting Principal Dr. Anees Choudhary while adding that since his appointment, he has disgraced the institution of Principal, violated its sanctity and stooped too low in earning money from corrupt means.
Sarpanches while addressing the media alleged that corrupt practices of acting Principal forced them to come together and seek his immediate removal. They claimed of having received innumerable complaints of his corrupt practices and abhorrent attitude. SubhashSharma, who is General Secretary of MahaPanchayat, said that patients coming from rural areas have to pay underhand for tests and others necessary things.
He said that Patients are harassed and humiliated while the acting Principal has been openly extorting money without any fear of getting caught. “We have credible reports that the acting Principal has begun demanding money for Surgeries, issuance of various certificates including Board certificates and from Under-Graduates and Post-Graduates for passing various examinations,” said Sharma.
Referring to the sufferings of commoners, Sharma said that it is this pain coupled with inaction on the part of the concerned Medical Education Minister R.S.Chib, which provoked them to knock at the doors of media. “Medical Education ministry’s silence is baffling in the wake of the fact that respective Principals and Heads of various departments have repeatedly written to the state government about the corrupt practices and moral wrongdoings of Dr. Anees Choudhary,” Sharma said.
He disclosed that ex-Principal Dr. Heera Lal Goswami had urged government to initiate disciplinary proceedings against him. “Another respected Professor of ENT Dr. R.K.Hak had complained to the government about Dr. Anees Choudhary’s attitude and stated that he prefers looking after Patients at the clinic and avoids Hospital. He had further said hat Dr. Choudhary is hardly seen in the operation theatre on the operation day and is never available for the emergency services,” Sharma said.
He referred to certain official documents and said that a man who has more than 60 cases pending against him in the court of law is acting Principal of an institution and a Hospital which is being upgraded and would be brought at par with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He said “We are surprised what made the present government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appoint such an unscrupulous person, acting Principal of Medical College. We firmly believe that Chief Minister would undo the wrong once the true picture reaches him though media.”
Sharma said that he is pained at Medical Education Minister R.S.Chib’s silence. “His attitude has baffled us since we presume him as our elder and expected him to remove this Principal immediately after complaints reached him. But he preferred to continue with him. Now is the height,” added Chib. He stressed that the press conference is to serve an ultimatum to the government that if the acting Principal of GMCH is not removed immediately, we would stage a massive Dharna, wherein hundreds of Panches and Sarpanches would be involved.
“We would lock up the Principal’s office and stage Dharna outside it. Dharna would be a warning to the establishment to replace this corrupt and inefficient acting Principal immediately. If our demand is not met with immediately, government would be responsible for consequences,” Sharma threatened. A battery of Sarpanches was sitting with Subhash Sharma during the press conference.
