Insensitive Congress forces Anna to go political
Crusade Against Corruption
8/4/2012 8:10:02 AM

Neha
Jammu, Aug 3: Anna Hazare launched campaign against corruption at national level last year. The campaign gained momentum with each passing day. The significance of the movement could be gauged from the fact that 2011 was virtually the Anna's year, with the Congress-led UPA Government and several political parties at the receiving end. The Government was so afraid of him that it had to call a special session of the Parliament to discuss the demands made by Anna. The Parliament adopted a unanimous resolution, called "sense of the House. It happened last year. The Government promised an effective Lokpal. The result was that Anna called off his 13-day-long fast at Ramlila Ground New Delhi last August.
As was expected, the Union Government, which is being dismissed by one and all as the most corrupt Government, went back on its promise and passed a toothless Lokpal bill in the Lok Sabha. Thereafter, Anna sat on fast twice, but the Congress-led Government remained unmoved. On July 25, three members of Team Anna - Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sishodia and Gopal Rai - started fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar, but failed to evoke any response from the insensitive Government. Four days later, Anna also joined the fast. This time their demands were three: Lokpal Bill, institution of special investigating team charged with the responsibility of looking into the serious charges of corruption against 15 Cabinet Ministers, including the Prime Minister and the new Union President, and investigation into the charges of corruption against heads of political parties like Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party. The Government refused to consider any of their demands. In fact, it did not even once approach the Team Anna with a view to persuading them to call off fast-unto-death or initiate a dialogue with them. This, despite the massive response the hunder strike evoked across the country.
In the meantime, the health of Kejriwal, Sishodia and Rai deteriorated with doctors suggesting that they be hospitalized without losing a moment. Convinced that Anna, Kejriwal, Sishodia and Rai were demanding something the present Government will never concede and convinced that anything could happen to these four persons anytime, 23 prominent citizens of India, including former Army Chief General VK Singh intervened to save the lives of Anna and his colleagues. They appealed to them to call off the strike and work for the creation of political force in the country to take on and expose the Indian political class. Their appeal clicked. Anna yesterday announced that he was not against the creation of a viable political force in the country. He also said that the present Government will neither pass an effective lokpal bill nor would it constitute SIT to look into the charges of corruption against 15 Union Ministers and presidents of various political parties supporting the UPA Government from outside.
It is under these circumstances that Anna Hazare, who had all along stated that his will be a apolitical movement, indicated his willingness to give his movement a political orientation. A number of TV channels have conducted surveys to know the people's response to the Anna announcement, announcement made reluctantly. Over 90% of the people who expressed their opinion supported the Anna's move.
In any case, this is not a good development. It would have been better had the Team Anna conducted itself in the manner it had been conducting till yesterday. By becoming a political party, they would lose the moral authority. Will Anna and his team members review their stand? They must.
