100 deaths but Amarnath Shrine Board just not shaken
8/4/2012 8:10:16 AM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 3: In a span of just 39 days, 100 yatris have died, Supreme Court had taken suo-moto notice of the deaths of pilgrims but Shri Amarnath Shrine Board seems to just stirred but not shaken.
Last year 106 yatris had died during yatra lasting 43 -days, and if this year the duration had been same, the death toll could have most probably surpassed all previous figures.
Despite the national clamour on account of death, the Board had at no point taken responsibility for it. On the contrary , it had been only shrugging off its responsibility and is keen to focus on cleaning the track- because of the environmental issue, which had become a rallying point in the valley for short duration of the yatra and also against the ever increasing number of yatris.
In a post yatra meeting held at Srinagar, chaired by Governor NN Vohra, who is also the chairman of the Board, the priority set out by it is to launch cleanliness drive. The Board discussed the ways and methods for putting up sewerage treatment plan.
In the note issued by the Board after the meeting not a single mention was made about expressing regret over the deaths. Ironically true to its style, it said deaths had taken place because yatris didn't follow Do's and Don'ts.
This reflects the attitude of the Board in managing the affairs of the yatra and also in minimizing the deaths, a concern expressed by the apex court of the country.
The Governor, who had held highest administrative post in the past during his IAS career, had been known for being pliant to political bosses and not showing grit and determination to stand up for rights and putting his foot down even in face of opposition to get things down in a right manner.
This attitude of the Governor, is a sharp contrast to his predecessors like SK Sinha and even Jagmohan who not only showed the way to get the things done but also made Kashmiri leadership to realize where the Buck actually stops.
But, Vohra, who is now dreaming of another post, in true with the acronym of IAS: Indian Accruing Service- had not shown concern over the deaths so as to not to antagonize the Kashmiri political leadership so that his plan of another posting could be shaken.
However, things would not be easy next year as nation has become extremely conscious of this fact and with apex court keeping watch on it.
