Extortion mafia operates in multi shifts at Bus Stand Authorities maintain 'strategic' silence | | |
Abodh Sharma Jammu, Aug 3: Open extortion racket run by a strong transport mafia is operating at Jammu Bus Stand that thrives on muscle power, criminal background and connivance with Police and plunders lakhs every month from poor transporters who are already fighting spiralling cost of fuel and several other challenges to keep their vehicles on road. Sources disclosed that group of people with shady backgrounds have been indulging in extortion in the name of associations of 2X2 buses on Jammu-Kathua, Jammu-Udhampur, Jammu-Katra routes and charging each operator rupees of Rs. 50-70 per ferry without any receipt or record that amounts to lakhs of rupees every month, but the collected money has never been accounted for or used for any collective or community purpose. "They do not only charge money, but also decide the timings of departure of various buses on the route wherein they allocate peak timings to their own buses and relegate others to non peak timings" said transporter who did not want to be named. RTO Jammu when contacted, however, said that the time table of these buses is decided by his office in consultation with the elected associations, but how do they allocate these timings to the buses is their internal matter. He, however, admitted that no separate bus stand has been earmarked for the 2X2 buses and they operate from BC road which is illegal. SHO, police station Bus Stand when contacted expressed ignorance that such an extortion racket was operating in the Bus Stand even though the transporters reiterated that the mafia enjoyed patronage of the police for obvious reasons. It is pertinent to mention here that the tourist taxies of all kinds starting from Bus Stand also have to pay unaccounted amount to the mafia without asking any questions.
