Sham, Madan launch Rs 5 cr project to develop Sumah as heritage site
'Conservation of historical places priority of Govt'

JAMMU, Aug 4: Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sham Lal Sharma has said that the state government was taking concerted measures for the preservation and conservation of heritage sites.
He said the state of Jammu and Kashmir was known for its scenic splendour and rich cultural heritage across the world and there were lot of unexplored such areas which need to be projected at the national and international levels for attraction of tourists and pilgrims, adding that centre and state is making all out efforts to highlight such areas for the economic development.
This was stated by the Minister while addressing a huge gathering after laying foundation stone for development the facilities and surroundings at historical site of Sumah in Akhnoor Thesil.
The Union Government funded project under Border Area Tourism Development Programme, is being executed by Tourism Department involving an estimated cost of about Rs 5 crore.
Member Parliament, Madan Lal Sharma was also present on the occasion. Sumah is an ancient holy place which is visited by a large number of devotees on various religious occasions. The various components of the project include construction of double storey dormitory, hut, development of old spring, construction of bathing Ghat, Development of Park, construction of tiled path for walkway, construction of footbridge, construction of water body and approach road among other works.
Speaking on the occasion, Madan said that the central government was making every efforts to restore the pristine glory of heritage sites and steps are being taken to show case these to attract the tourist and increase their stay in the state, particularly the pilgrims tourists of Shri Mata Vaishno Deviji and Shiv Khori Shrine. He said the state of J&K has a variety of attraction for the visitors, including adventure sports and eco-tourism in addition to the traditional leisure tourism.
Highlighting the historical importance of Akhnoor town, Madan said that faster development of this town has been accorded priority by the government and various schemes and projects in various sections have been initiated to achieve its balanced.
On the occasion, MP announces Rs.5 lakh for development of play ground in Sumah. He asked the locals to donate 5 to 8 kanal land for this purpose.
