8/4/2012 10:38:33 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 4 : About 1200 vehicles of the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) were grounded as more than 4,000 employees, including drivers and conductors, went on an indefinite strike, alleging that government was transferring the prime property of the SRTC to other departments. The strike has badly affected winter supply to Ladakh region and to other far flung areas.
"We are on an indefinite strike from yesterday in protest against the government's decision to take away corporation prime land at Tourist Reception Centre (TRC)," president of the SRTC Wajahat said. Sitting on a dharna alongwith hundreds of other employees near the headquarter of the SRTC on Moulana Azad Road here, he said on the directions of Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, the gate of the main SRTC stand was closed and no employee was allowed to enter there.
He said bus and other service to Delhi and Jammu besides Srinagar airport and other tourist places was operating from the stand. "Our buildings were grounded alongwith office record," he said adding a case has already filed by the employees in the court against the government decision. He said the coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah wanted to construct a ' Tahzeeb Mahal' on our land, which is in grass violation of the SRTC Act. "We are being asked to earn to feed ourselves," he said adding but when " our prime property, which contributes 75 per cent of our earning, was being taken away how can the corporation survive." He said the decision to take" away our land was arbitarry and against the principal of justice."
