Are Muslims really unsafe in Kashmir? | Abnormal Situation | | Neha Jammu, Aug 4: Are Muslims really unsafe in Kashmir, which is 100 per cent Muslim and which has a Kashmiri Muslim-dominated dispensation? Yes, if one goes by what the Kashmir High Court Bar Association (KHCBA) said yesterday. It said that if the Kashmiri Muslims themselves are not safe in the Valley, how could the State Government and separatist leaders give assurances to Kashmiri Hindus that there would be no threat to their lives in case they returned to their original homes? Those ruling the State are saying they are not safe in Kashmir. It is ridiculous and amusing. It was general secretary of KHCBA advocate GN Shaheen who expressed these views while addressing the condolence meeting at the Srinagar's residence of advocate Aijaz Ahmad Dar, whose father had died. "The State repression is at its peak. The human rights situation (in Kashmir) is grave due to the escalating violence by the troops. The custodial killing of Hilal Ahmad Dar of Bandipora and death in torture of Muhammad Aqib of Balpora, Shopian, is the reflection of the State-terrorism perpetuated by troops as a matter of policy in J&K to subjugate the will of the people of Jammu and Kashmir (read Kashmir). Such gruesome events deserve an independent and impartial probe through the human rights agencies, particularly the United Nations Human Rights Commission and other human rights organizations. The Bar has sent an SOS to the United Nations Secretary General, Bank-Ki-Moon, with the request (that he must) intervene (so that) Kashmir dispute is resolved and human rights in Jammu and Kashmir (read Kashmir) are protected," he, among other things, said. It is hardly necessary to report the circumstances under which Dar and Aqib died. Suffice it to say that in Kashmir an abnormal situation prevails with Islamabad and Islamabad-promoted and funded terrorist organizations like Lashkar-e-Toiba and Pakistani agents in the Valley leaving no stone unturned to arouse anti-India passions and instigate Kashmiri youth and others to attack the symbols of Indian State, target the Army and the CRPF camps and kill those engaged in anti-insurgency operations. It has been happening in Kashmir since the late 1980s. Thousands of our soldiers have lost their lives. Yes, many people have died in Kashmir during the past more than 22 years. But they died because they challenged and attacked the Indian State and took the law of the land into their hands killing innocent civilians, soldiers and paramilitary personnel. It is the fundamental duty of the security forces to rein in and control the unruly elements, maintain law and order and defend the territorial integrity of the country. They would be regarded as sinner in case they do not discharge their obligations towards the State. Ours are the highly disciplined security forces. They are known for maintaining cool even when the provocation is grave. They retaliate or they swing into action only when they feel that things are likely to go out of hand. They also sometime open fire in self-defence and this is permitted. If the likes of Shaheen believe that the Indian State would watch anti-India activities as a mute spectator, then it can be said that they are living in a fool's paradise. The Army and paramilitary forces would surely take action against the undesirable. There should be no doubt about it. What, then, is the way out? Shaheen and others of his ilk should start a peace movement in Kashmir so that no one in Kashmir raises even his little finger against India. They should remember that in an abnormal situation many things happen. Kashmir is not an exception. So, restore peace to avoid the avoidable. |
