Will Anna wave cross over Pir Panjal mountain range? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 4: If ultimately team Anna forms a political party for contesting the next election will it cause any political convulsion in Jammu and Kashmir ? Will the formation of an Anna led political party lead to political permutation and combination in Jammu and Kashmir ? Those who do not expect the Anna led political party to make any headway in Jammu and Kashmir and those who doubt whether the Anna wave will cross into Kashmir refer to July 2011 episode when the Valley had not experienced even a mild tremor over Anna who had taken the country by a storm. Even if Anna gives a definite shape to his idea of forming a political party it may not set the river Jhelum on fire as was the case in 1977 when the then Janata Party set up its unit in Srinagar. Though the Janata Party had assumed much needed political vigour, after many organisations, including the then Jana Sangh, joined it, to become a viable alternative to the Congress at the national level it did not fire the imagination of voters in the Kashmir valley. The Janata Party contested not only the Lok Sabha elections in the country but also the Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir. That Kashmir rejected the Janata Party in 1977 elections was evident by the fact that it won only two seats in the Valley. Yes, the Janata Party established its presence in the Jammu region where its candidates won more than 12 seats. Its strength in the Assembly swelled after some independent candidates joined it. In 1977 Assembly elections Janata Party had one surprise in its kitty. It had expected a major gain after the then Kashmir Mirwaiz and chairman Awami Action Committee, Molvi Farooq, had supported it. In the context of the 1977 developments one does not expect the Anna led political party to make significant inroads in Kashmir where the political scenario has witnessed stormy transformation after the rise of militancy in 1989. Yes, it can establish its base in the Jammu region provided there is no patchup between the dissidents and the loyalists. It is yet to be seen whether the PDP, which had announced its support to the Anna led team in its campaign against corruption, forges some secret understanding with Anna and his people in the Jammu region only. If it does the PDP may be a gainer. Since the voters in the Kashmir valley have been supporting regional parties, first it used to pro-NC wave, but after the formation of the PDP, another regional party in 1999, people have shifted their loyalty to the Muftis. It is only in the Jammu region where regional parties measure muscles with the national parties. |
