GREF substandard work exposed in Kishtwar | Future of 200 KM Batote-Doda-Kishtwar-Sinthan NH in dark | | Asif Iqbal Naik Kishtwar, Aug 4: General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) responsible for the construction of 200 KM Batote-Doda-Kishtwar-Sinthan road was caught while using substandard material in construction of motorable bridge at Parna in Chatroo tehsil some 41 KM from District Headquarter Kishtwar on Kishtwar-Sinthan road stretch of Batote-Doda-Kishtwar-Sinthan National Highway connecting twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar with Kashmir valley. As per the photographs available with “Early Times” the future of this alternative link to Kashmir valley is in dark as the contractor who had been assigned the job of construction is using substandard material in the form of sand mixed with mud and low ratio of cement in construction of this bridge. The local people said that after witnessing the use of substandard material in construction of the bridge, they raised strong resentment with the contractor who informed them that it was the concerned officials of the GREF who allowed and press the use of such type of material in construction of bridge. “We bring the matter of substandard work into the notice of higher ups of GREF authorities and also into the notice of former Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar, but due to in action on part of the administration as well as from higher ups of GREF, the ground reality remain same as it was today,” said Chuni Lal. Chuni Lal said that the GREF contractors not only use the substandard material in construction of bridges, but also use the same material in construction of drains and protection walls threatening the safety of the National Highway. “It was due to use of substandard material in construction of breast walls, R-walls and protection walls, the National Highway near Assar some two years ago got badly damaged as a result of which Doda and Kishtwar districts remains cut off from rest of the State for more than 20 days,” said Ajiaz Hussain. Ajaiz said that he in front of general public along with some local youths even picked up some samples of substandard material used by the GREF in construction of drain in the heart of Kishtwar and handed over the same to district administration for analysis. He said that he is hopeful that district administration Kishtwar will analyze the handover material and initiate action against the concerned agency. Another person said that due to substandard work, Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway is sinking at many places. “In fact the Government must constitute an inquiry committee to probe the embezzlements in the form of substandard work executed by the GREF in the construction of Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway,” demanded many inhabitants of the erstwhile Doda district while talking to Early Times. Many people after getting dejected to see inaction from the district administration sent written complaints to top officials of GREF and Government functionaries and waiting action from them. “Due to GREF substandard work, the drain water enter into our rooms, threatening our residence and we are looking for legal option against the GREF,” said Ramesh Kumar of Shaheedi road Kishtwar. Mr. Ramesh said that he and his family members have faded up with repeated assurance from GREF officials since last 10 years regarding the repairment of drain passing outside our residence. It was not only the general public who are complaining about the GREF, but the shopkeepers in Kishtwar also complaint in large number about the substandard work executed by the agency. “Due to substandard material used in construction, the dust and the mud enter into over shops spoiling our valuable goods,” said shopkeeper Abrar Ahmed. |
