Of Valley's changing political trends | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 4: Is Kashmir really changing? While nobody can be fully sure about it, the political experts do see a changing trend in the Valley. For the first time in the past two decades the Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has taken interest in governance issues. He took the Government to task for its failure to provide basic facilities to the people. He accused the Government of failure for providing electricity and potable water to the people. The 2008 elections witnessed massive participation of the people in Kashmir. The voters, however, told the media persons that they were voting for Bijli (Electricity), Pani (Water) and Nali (Drains). On the basis of this, the separatist camp held that the coalition Government had no mandate for resolution of the Jammu Kashmir Dispute. "They have mandate of the people for electricity, water and drains and they (coalition Government) better remain confined to that ,said they. The coalition Government today can say that the separatists have no mandate to indulge in mundane issues like electricity and water. But, the Chief Minister while responding to Mirwaiz's `governance concerns' on February 13 this year welcomed his criticism. The change is visible at other corners in the Mirwaiz camp. The former chairman, Professor Abdul Ghani Bhat hinted at taking the pro-Indian parties along if they showed `positive change'. Bhat also created a political storm by stating that the UN Resolutions had become redundant. Change was also seen in the Geelani Hurriyat as well. While the elderly leader was in Delhi interacting with civil society actors in winter, an important constituent, Muslim League (ML) headed by jailed Masarat Alam dissociated itself from Geelani's activities. And, if the separatist camp has changed the pro-Indian lobby has not remained static. Political experts opine that there has been a definite change in mainstream discourse. The Indra-Abdullah Accord of 1975 has attracted much attention. But why? |
