IAF evacuates stranded civilians from flooded Tawi river | | | JAMMU, Aug 5: Displaying exemplary courage and acumen, Indian Air Force pilots saved several people who were caught in flash floods near village GanduChak. Acting after receiving an SOS call from state government for evacuating stranded civilians from the flooded Tawi river near village Gandu Chak, the rescue helicopter got airborne within half an hour of the received information. The general area of evacuation was flooded and the pilots used their experience to identify the site. Since the Tawi river was flooded and time was premium, the pilots landed close to the stranded people so as to pick them up in one go. On landing at the island in the Tawi River, it was realized that the helicopter was sinking in the mud. The captain decided to hold the helicopter lightly on wheels and instructed the winch operator to get down and get the civilians inside the helicopter. The captain displayed exemplary skills and courage to hold on controls when the casualty was being loaded. There after the aircraft got airborne and landed at the bank of the river where the rescued people were disembarked. The IAF displayed professionalism and their dedication to service to the nation by carrying out this challenging task. The image of the IAF helicopters as being "life savers" in J&K area was once again highlighted. Wing Commander Ajay Bhardwaj, Commanding Officer of the Udhampur based helicopter unit along with Flt Lt Milind and Flt Lt Kunal undertook this challenging task. |
