Prof Gupta hails installation of traffic signal lights
8/5/2012 10:13:01 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 5: Welcoming the installation of the electronic signal lights at some crossings to control the traffic in Jammu city, the former union minister and MLA Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has observed that this alone would not be suffice to meet the challenge of the mess that has been created.
Prof Gupta said that the installation of traffic signal lights would ease the situation to a small extent as the problem is a quite bigger one. The reason being that there has been a very big rise in the number of vehicles but in comparison there has been little increase in the length and breadth of the roads. The situation also demanded other measures like that of construction of Flyovers, widening of the roads and more so, the improvement in the management.
He regretted that all these measures have been the victim of political whims and other such considerations, in this regard, Prof Gupta particularly referred to withholding of approved schemes for construction of flyovers at BC Road, Janipur Road, Bikram Chowk to Talab Tillo, in addition to creating of parking places.
Referring to growing congestion and traffic jams, Prof Gupta also pointed out to the absence of parking places and laxity in regulating the traffic at such points.
He also referred to the poor maintenance of roads and inordinate delay in repairing the roads and lanes after digging these in connection with developmental activities.
He stressed for total review of the messy situation and effective steps to deal with the problems by taking into account the growing allegations of corruption.
