| Team Anna's task not that easy | | Political Alternative | | Neha
JAMMU, Aug 5: Team Anna has finally taken the plunge and declared that it will provide a political alternative. It doesn't matter if the Team Anna has taken this decision under compulsion or after comprehensive deliberations. But the fact remains that its task is not that easy. Indeed, it has decided to tread a very difficult path. It would be better if the Team Anna reconsiders its decision and ponder over whether it would be desirable to cleanse the system by becoming part of it or achieve the stated objective by remaining out of it.
By becoming a political party, the Team Anna will have not only to answer many questions and silence its critics, but also to make its stand clear on all the issues. It will have to explain as to what its foreign policy would be; what it thinks about the Maoist terrorists; what it thinks about Jammu & Kashmir; what would be its stand on Pakistan; what would be its economic and social policies; what will be its attitude towards FDI and India Inc.; what would be its stand on radical Islamists; what will be its stand on reservation policy; and so on. The fact of the matter is that people have already started asking questions to this effect to the Team Anna. It will be extremely difficult for the Team Anna to satisfy all and more especially its critics, particularly parties like the Congress.
The Team Anna has been saying that it will give a concrete shape to the party it has proposed to launch and choose its candidates in consultation with the people and that it will change the scenario in the country within a period of three years. It is easy to make such statements but it is difficult to reach the goal considering the fact that the Indian political system is as it is. The Indian political system is rotten. The Indian political class has subverted almost all the institutions. It is so corrupt that it can go to any extent to vitiate and manipulate the system to keep the honest, well-meaning and public-spirited persons out of it. It has money. It has muscle power. It has its men at right places. The Team Anna cannot really compete with the Indian political class.
Anna Hazare has said that his team has almost two years at its disposal to do the needful and prepare itself for the 2014 general elections. It is difficult to say that the Team Anna would be able to do the needful in such a short span of time and bring down the present government and install a new one. If one goes by the past experience, then one can say that the Team Anna would meet the fate similar other elements met.
The truth, in short, is that the Team Anna, which till Friday used to say that it was non-political and that it will never take the political plunge, has surprised many. It has also created in the country a situation which would force well-meaning persons to think hundred times before taking decision to start hunger strike or start a peaceful movement aimed at forcing the government to bring about changes in the system. Besides, its decision to call off the hunger strike so suddenly and midway has weakened Baba Ramdev, who has launched a struggle with a view to forcing the government to bring back to India black money stashed in foreign banks. It would be better if the Team Anna reconsider its decision and work as a non-political pressure group. By remaining apolitical, it can serve the cause well. Even otherwise, a review has become imperative considering the fact that many in the Team Anna have expressed themselves against the decision. Even Anna Hazare has declared that he would neither launch a political party nor contest election. |
