Pakistan not a suitable option: KC | An agreement was reached with Hurriyat | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 5: Kashmir Committee chairman and former Union Law Minister, Ram Jethmalani today said accession to Pakistan was not a suitable option for the people of Kashmir. He was interacting with a galaxy of civil society members. "India is a secular country. I will tell you what secularism actually means and how important it is in the contemporary times." Responding to a remark that 84% of India lived below poverty line, he said: "India is not poor. It is a rich country but has been rendered poor by vested interests." Giving details of his previous engagement with the Hurriyat leaders, Ram said: "An agreement was reached urging us to give up extremist positions on both the sides. While BJP had agreed not to seek abrogation of Article 370, Hurriyat agreed not to seek secession", The veteran lawyer received some tough moments during the interaction. "I am not the accused and I do not plead guilty at least for the time being", he said. Clarifying his position, he said he did not represent the government of India. "I have started my life in India from a refugee camp with just Rs 10 in my pocket. I owe a lot to the people of India. I want to help them by ensuring peace in the country", he said. Ram decided to revive the Kashmir Committee after his visit to Paksitan where he was warmly received. "I had a long meeting with the Pakistan President. I saw sincerity in their approach. After coming back I decided to revive the Kashmir Committee', he said. The `failure' of the interlocutors was other reason for revival of he Committee, he said. |
