Huge breach in Ujh embankment leaves standing crops, inhabitations vulnerable | Locals rue poor quality of construction, demand probe | | ARUN TRISAL Kathua, Aug 5: Swollen Ujh river has washed away a major part of the embankment constructed few years back, leaving huge chunk of cultivable land and even inhabitations along it vulnerable to gushing flood waters. Concerned group of local farmers informed ET that 180 meter long portion of 1.25 Km embankment on Ujh constructed four years back to protect the cultivated land in Panchayat Gatti tehsil Basohli has been washed off, raising serious question mark over the safety and security of inhabitations along the river and hectares of cultivable land besides the quality of construction of the embankment. The farmers of the affected area of the Gatti claim that around 1200 hectare of their cultivated agriculture land can be eroded easily because most of the over flowing flood water had gushed into their field through broken earthen embankment. The prominent farmers of the area Sarpanch (Gatti) J.P Singh, Randeep Singh, Chattaranjan Paul Singh, Niku Singh, Ravi Paul Singh, Veer Singh and Ranjit Singh led a protest against the Govt alleging substandard flood protection wall and demanded an investigation into its construction and action against those involved. "Construction of a bank along Ujh was an important project worth Rs. 14 crore wherein six spots namely Rajbagh to Chhabe Chack, Jakhole to Kherian, Jthana Gatti, Pandori and near Ujh Dam were earmarked for the construction in order to avoid the erosion of cultivated land in 2008. But it is shocking that second time in four years, 180 meter of this protection wall got washed away leaving over 1200 hectares of cultivated land vulnerable to flood waters" rued the protesting farmers, accusing the contractors and executing agency for sub standard work that had caused breach in the embankment. MLA Basohli, Jagdish Sapolia who inspected the spot at Gatti apprehended discrepancies in construction work of project worth 14 cr. and expressed concern that the gushing flood water could erode away hundreds of hectares of cultivable land. The Ex-Engineer Flood Control Kathua, R.C Thapa when contacted said that the department had fathomed the quantum of damage to the flood protection wall to submit the report before higher authorities for further action. |
