PSOs serve as "official" servants of "protected" persons in J&K | | | early times report JAMMU, Aug 5: Personal Security Officers (PSOs) alloted to some "protected" persons in J&K are vitually acting as their servants and servants of their children who are studying in professional colleges outside the state. These PSOs have not worn police uniforms for the past many years, according to police sources. They could often be seen buying vegetables in the market for their "masters", carrying milk, curd and other items of daily use for them, and doing other menial jobs. "They are not actually performing the duties for which they have been attached to the so-called protected persons," the sources added. "Actually this lot of protected persons does not require PSO/PSOs as they do not at all face any threat from militants," sources said and added that "they manage to get PSOs for them, using their political connections. Sources alleged that the PSOs of a high-profile leader had been putting up outside the state to "protect" his children from no one and also to do their household works. "In a way, they have become their servants whose monthly salaries are being paid by the government," the sources added. Sources said not only politicians, there were some bureaucrats too who were using PSOs allotted to them by the government as their servants. Many of these PSOs could be seen driving cars and carrying children of the protected persons to stadium, dancing institutes and tuition classes. "They also perform the duty of carrying the wives of these protected persons to beauty parlours, health clubs and relatives' houses," the sources added. To flaunt their riches, political strength and influence others, the children of this set of protected persons could be seen wandering in Jammu university and at some public places in the winter capital city here. "The PSO of the leader of a lesser known political party does the duty of attending customers in the latter's kiryana shop somewhere in the city," sources said. PSOs could also be seen in the posh Gandhi Nagar and Chhanni Himmat localities teaching cycling and driving to the wards of protected persons, the sources added. At the instance of the government, the CID wing of the state police had an year, or so back prepared the list of VIPs who had been alloted PSOs. The exercise was done to withdraw PSOs from those who actually never faced threat to their lives. Sources said, while the list was submitted by the CID to the government, no action was taken. The list was said to have been prepared by IGP Sunil Sharma when he was DIG, CID, the sources added. Sources said there was an emergent need for withdrawing the PSOs of those "VIPs" who did not require them and then posting them at police stations which were faced with "shortage" of men.
