Jammu gets primitive, outdated traffic lights | Undue favours extended to relative of a retired senior Police officer? | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Aug 5: In between the din by several Government agencies over the traffic lights installed in the city the previous day seeking credit in public eye for their installation, the fact of the matter is that the lights installed in the city after a wait of over a decade are primitive and outdated. Besides compromising on the quality of the installed lights, sources reveal that the contract for installation of such outdated lights was allocated to a particular company in order to extend favours to a close relative of a senior police officer, now retired. According to the informed sources, the traffic lights installed in the city are of isolated, stand alone type while those being installed in the cities across the country these days are integrated clusters controlled by coordinated timing devices and operated by an automated control room, which have CCTV cameras mounted atop them for identifying traffic violators and also provide crucial visual evidences in case of accidents on city crossings. Sources also inform that the Government had constituted a committee for identifying and ascertaining the feasibility of installation of traffic lights at various places in the city and also for allocating the contract for installation of the same, which was headed by a former IGP Traffic. Interestingly, the contract was given to M/S Ace Engineering Company, owned by a close relative of a former IGP. "The same company was also allocated contract for erecting fabricated barriers on city roads, many of which could not sustain their presence for more than few weeks" said a top source in the Government, adding " a separate presentation was taken from the said company which had failed to turn up for presentation with the other parties". While IGP Traffic was first to announce commissioning of lights in a hurriedly called press conference and Jammu Municipal Corporation is going gaga over their installation, both the agencies have ignored some vital pre requisites before their 'phased' commissioning. "There are no markings of zebra crossings, stop lines etc. which are very important especially for a city like Jammu where drivers shall have maiden exposure to regulation through lights and are bound to make mistakes initially" said a former officer of traffic police. Meanwhile, project costing a whopping Rs.2.50 crore comprising 30 lights was launched with commissioning of 10 of them at the initial stage on Saturday last.
