Dr Jitendra calls for joint crusade against diabetes | | | early times report Jammu, Aug 6 : "The challenge of rapidly rising Diabetes prevalence in the Indian subcontinent is too serious a matter to be left to a Diabeto-logist alone as it requires a consistent joint crusade involving various government and non-government health agencies as well as professional inputs not only from medical researchers but also from social scientists, educationists and cultural activists". These observations were made by Dr Jitendra Singh, National Professor of Diabetes and noted author while addressing a "Diabetes Update CME" progra-mme held here today for doctors, M.D. students and medical professionals on the theme and subject of "Unmet needs in the management of Type 2 Diabetes". Dr Jitendra Singh, who was the Guest Faculty Speaker on the occasion, cited alarming statistical figures of diabetes prevalence in India and said that even in a state like Jammu and Kashmir, where diabetes is said to be less common compared to several other States of India, the prevalence is no less than over 15% in urban areas. Dr Singh spoke about a number of anti-diabetic drugs that have become available in the last two or three years and also enumerated the various drugs which are in the pipeline or under trial with likelihood of becoming available in the next few years. Dr S.K. Gupta and Dr Bharat Bhushan Gupta, former HODs Medicine GMC Jammu, jointly chaired the scientific session. |
