Deaths of fish in Nigeen Lake foretell an impending disaster? | | | early times report Srinagar, Aug 6: The large-scale deaths of fish in Nigeen Lake in the city is not only shocking, it is also Nature's way of putting the 1.3 million strong population of the summer capital on notice. The explanation given by the State Fisheries Department for the mortality is couched in scientific jargon, but in layman's term the warning is red, precise and loud. The Nigeen Lake has hydrobiologically 'died'. It is a dead Lake that cannot support any form of life inside it. The deaths of fish those could be seen floating on the surface of the lake today morning clearly indicate that all other forms of life inside the lake have also either died or are on their last legs. Oxygen inside the lake has become deficient because of the pollution of the lake's waters through discharge of poisonous wastes from the scores of houseboats inside the lake and thousands of houses around it. The official explanation that the rise in temperatures did the disaster is not logical because if that alone was the factor then no lake outside the state where temperatures rise much higher should host any form of life much less the fish. All the chemical wastes and affluent are directly drained into the Nigeen Lake which has resulted in the present tragedy. In order to lessen the impact of this hydrobiological disaster, the Department of Fisheries has issued a statement saying it regrets the tragedy, but would be taking steps to protect the biosphere of the lake. This is another techno babble which Kashmiris in particular and the people of the rest of the state in general must be saved from. The hard reality is that if the Nigeen Lake, whose waters looked much healthier than the interconnected Dal Lake, has reached these levels of pollution then what is the plight of the Dal Lake? The waters of the Dal Lake are foul smelling, the weeds removed and dumped on the banks of the lake have made the passage of people difficult because of the obnoxious smell the drying dumped weeds emit. Azolla, macrophytes and other weeds have covered the surface of the Dal Lake which already looks murky and dirty. A Shikara ride inside the Lake which once used to be a memorable experience has finally become a pathetic one. Not only that the waters of the Dal lake have been completely made unfit for drinking because of the high levels of the Lake's pollution, but now bathers have started growing rashes and skin allergies after a hot summer plunge into the Lake's waters. Millions of rupees have already been spent on the preservation and protection of the Dal Lake. Millions are earmarked every year for continuing the preservation effort. The Dal Lake has finally become a bottomless pit into which the precious money of the tax payers is dumped for no good reasons as no appreciable improvement has taken place inside the lake's ecology nor has the process of its degradation been finally checked. Nigeen Lake has already sounded the trumpet, Srinagar's pride and tourists dream destinations like the Nigeen and the Dal Lakes could soon be lost forever. |
