NC denounces Mir, separatists do agree with him | Economic Independence | | Neha Jammu, Aug 6: On August 2, Democratic Party (Nationalist) president and Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir sprung a big surprise by holding Sheikh Abdullah responsible for creating mess in Kashmir and dismissing outrightly the demands like autonomy and self-rule. At the same time, he underlined the need to achieve economic independence. "Economic independence must take precedence over political independence. When we are economically dependent on someone else, we can't achieve anything. We have to become self-reliant," he had said. Actually, he had given an interview to a local news agency KNS. The same day National Conference additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal denounced Mir for his views on his father Sheikh Abdullah and autonomy. Denouncing Mir, Kamaal, inter-alia, said: "He (Mir) has bigger political ambitions far beyond his political stature. He is fully supported by security agencies, which have all along propped him. He is talking their language. Many of the politicians who have been speaking against late Sheikh Abdullah should go through the history before making such assertions. People like Mir should first look within and then talk as he has played a dubious and dirty role since 1990. He is indulging in cheap politics. Autonomy, we believe, is the only viable solution". Kamaal was not the only NC leader who condemned Mir. Ali Mohammad Sagar, Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Mehboob Beg, Member of Lok Sabha, also took on Mir and defended to the hilt Sheikh Abdullah and the demand for autonomy. Both of them cautioned Mir and asked him to hold his horses. Yesterday, a number of separatists reacted to what Mir had said regarding economic independence. No separatist defended Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. On the contrary, they opined that the idea of economic independence as enunciated by Mir was not bad and charged the "mainstream" Kashmiri leaders with "selling out the natural resources of the State to India". Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the crumbling Hurriyat Conference (M), said that "there is nothing wrong in Mir's statement" and that it is the "mainstream politicians themselves (who) have enslaved Kashmiri nation for petty economic benefits and power." "They talk of economic self-reliance but, at the same time, sell out the resources of the State to India," Mirwaiz told KNS and added that "New Delhi was never willing to make the trouble-hit Jammu and Kashmir economically a stable one". Aga Syed Hassan, another leader of the APHC (M), expressed also identical views. He told KNS that "We are not against the self-reliance of the State and if they are talking of joint efforts, there is nothing wrong in it. But then it should not deviate people from persuing the basic issue which is the Kashmir problem". "Right to self-determination is the basic right of Kashmiris and people will fight for it till it is achieved," he also said. The response of the Hurriyat leaders was on expected lines. For, they see in the economic independence an opportunity that could help them achieve their ultimate goal: separation from India and establishment in the separated region a theocratic rule. The fact is that the Hurriyat leaders were supportive of Mir. Mir cannot oppose Sheikh Abdullah and the demands for autonomy and self-rule and talk in terms of economic independence. It is a contradictory stand. He must come out with a statement indicating what exactly he meant by "economic independence" and "self-reliance". Another Hurriyat (M) leader Aga Syed Hassan told KNS that the economic reliance should not come in way of the basic issue of Kashmir. |
