Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 6: Finally, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand seems to have received a wake-up call and is learnt to have directed the officials of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) to re-start the suspended work of the memorial named after martyr Major Akash Singh.
Highly placed sources in Government revealed that following the reports of certain "petty" politicians acting as stumbling blocks for setting up of a well deserved memorial in the name of Major Akash Singh, coming to light, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand immediately directed Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, KL Khajuria to inquire the matter and ensure the completion of the said memorial as early as possible.
"Following the directions from Deputy Chief Minister, a battery of senior officials of JMC visited the proposed site situated in Ward No 33, Lower Shiv Nagar locality and adjacent to Government Polytechnic College for Women and near AG's Office, here and interacted with the area residents, who unanimously resolved and supported the construction of Shaheed Major Akash Singh Dwaar at the proposed site," sources further revealed.
It is pertinent to mention here that Early Times in its July 16th edition had exclusively reported that "how certain 'petty politicians including a police officer known for his close proximity with Congress stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad are acting as stumbling blocks for setting of a well deserved memorial in the name of Major Akash Singh".
Following the report, the Government directed the concerned department to inquire the issue and re-start the work for an early completion.
Young Major Akash Singh had lost his life while foiling infiltration bid on September 9, 2009 at the Line of Control in border district of Poonch in Jammu Province.
Before breathing his last, Major Akash Singh gunned down two terrorists and also saved the life of an Army jawan in a fierce gun battle that took place in Sonagali Post at Mendhar sub-sector in Poonch district.
Sources confirmed that "the Contractor has been asked to re-start the work and complete the same as early as possible."
