Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 6: With Congress activists totally annoyed with functioning of coalition Government led by Omar Abdullah a Delhi based senior Party leader from the State has suggested the Party High Command to withdraw its Ministers from coalition and extend only outside support to NC led alliance to refurbish image of party in trouble-torn State.
The suggestion was made by the senior Congress leader and a former Union Minister after receiving a feedback from Congress activists from J&K to ascertain their views on the functioning of alliance in the State, the party sources said.
Sources said that the senior Congress leader who met the Party activists from all three regions of J&K had suggested in its recommendation that the party high command should pull out its Ministers and extend external support to Omar Abdullah led Government as Congress was being held responsible for all the wrongs of the alliance in the State which will affect the future prospects of the party.
The senior Congress leader who is having close proximity to PDP patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had earlier architected the PDP-Congress alliance in the State, the sources said. Sources said as this strong Congressman who had also served as a Minister in the State during late seventies and who had a close rapport with Gandhi-Nehru family had also tried a lot to install the Congress-PDP Government in the State after 2008 Assembly elections. But in view of the dubious role played by PDP which withdrew support to Ghulam Nabi Azad Government in 2008 before completion if its three year term led the party High Command to extend its hand to NC, an arch rival of PDP in the State.
However, since the formation of coalition by NC-Congress the activists of Congress feel dejected and betrayed in the State and they took the banner of revolt against the alliance Government openly asking the High Command to pull out from coalition. The rivalry and in fighting was so visible among the two coalition partners that one of the former Ministers and senior party leader openly leveled the charges of corruption against the Government. Besides senior Congress activists also leveled allegations on the coalition Government and accused it of its dismal performance in the State forcing the High Command to send a team of Central representatives to ascertain the situation in the State and send its recommendations after receiving the feedback from the Partymen in the State.
One of the biggest resentment among the Congress activists according to sources is that in all the official functions their leaders are ignored even in the constituencies where the party has the mass base while NC men are given preference.
Taking this issue seriously hundreds of Congress activists from time to time visited New Delhi and apprised party chief Sonia Gandhi of the situation. Fully backed by the State party president these Congressmen have apprised Gandhi that if corrective measures were not taken well in advance the Congress will be a big loser in next Assembly elections due in 2014. On the insistence of these Congressmen from the State Mrs. Gandhi assigned the task to a Delhi based senior leader from State to interact with Congress men in every block of the State and submit the report on the basis received from them. The senior congress leader who had submitted his report over two months back to High command had made it categorical that pulling out its Ministers from the alliance will restore the sense of confidence in the State.
The report is under active consideration of High Command sources said, adding the theory may be given practical shape by ending this year so that party is in a position to refurbish its image before 2014 Assembly poll.
