Advani's machinations likely to damage BJP

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 7: Former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, who calls himself a BJP veteran and has been struggling hard to become Prime Minister, seems all out to spoil the electoral chances of the party which he led a number of times. It was he who led the BJP in the 2004 and 2009 general elections. As the Indian electorate had developed disliking for Advani, it rejected the BJP. It was not that the Congress had improved its tally in these elections because the Indian electorate liked the Congress leadership. It was the BJP under the ineffective and controversial leadership of Advani that lost much of its political space to the Congress.
There was general consensus in the country that Advani needed to be shown the door as he was as over ambitious as he was unscrupulous and that his continuation in the party after he praised Jinnah in Pakistan would only weaken the party and drive its constituency away from it. He did quit the top party position under pressure from the RSS but he again manipulated the situation in his favour. Leaders like Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, who were not feeling comfortable owing to the rise of Narendra Modi, the successful Chief Minister of Gujarat, threw in their lot with Advani, thus giving an opportunity to the former Deputy Prime Minister to wreck the party from within and outside. Advani thought of spoiling the BJP's electoral prospects after being convinced that the party might not project him as its Prime Ministerial candidate in the 2014 general elections. His stand is: Either he or none. And, he can go to any extent to mar the chances of others, especially leaders like Modi.
Advani has been for months now writing blog after blog with a view to creating an impression in the country that the BJP is in complete disarray, that there is crisis of leadership in the party and that it has failed to project itself as an effective opposition. Just after the conclusion of the BJP national executive meeting in Mumbai a few months ago, he wrote in his blog something which did make people believe that the BJP had ceased to play the role of an effective and responsible opposition. He wrote this at a time when Modi was in the news. The reason: He befriended party president Nitin Gadkari and secured the ouster of Sanjay Joshi from the BJP.
As if all this was not enough to cause an irreparable damage to the party which has given him so much, he the other day wrote another anti-party blog. He did predict that the Congress would suffer a massive defeat in the next general elections and that its tally would be less than hundred. (Right now, the number of Congress MPs in the Lok Sabha is 206.) But he did not say that the BJP would increase its tally. In fact, he wrote in his blog, which has generated a fierce debate across the country, that neither the Congress nor the BJP would lead the country after the next general elections and that there is a strong possibility of a third front candidate or non-Congress and non-BJP candidate leading the Government either with the support of the BJP or the Congress party. He wrote the BJP epithet even before the elections. He also in his own cunning style overruled the possibility of Modi leading the party in the next general elections.
It is no wonder then that his predictions and assessment have been rubbished by the NDA partners, including Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray) and Janata Dal (United). While Bal Thackeray has ridiculed Advani saying he is a weak commander and asked him to come to Mumbai to draw strength and inspiration from him, NDA convener Shard Yadav has publicly said that he doesn't share the views of Advani. Bal Thackeray has written a critical editorial on Advani in his widely-circulated vernacular daily, Saamana. As for the BJP leadership, less said the better. It is not finding any place to hide itself. It is simply beating about the bush. BJP spokespersons who are participating in the TV debates on his blog are only cutting a sorry figure with the Congress spokespersons making fool of them. They are congratulating Advani saying he has only spoken the truth by saying that his party is not in the reckoning. This is Advani and this is his attitude towards a party which gave him status. The real danger to the BJP is from the enemy within, and not from the Congress.
