After detection of underground infiltration route,it is untiring vigil on IB for smooth conduct of I-Day | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Aug 7: The detection of the 400 mt long tunnel, running between Pakistan and India, and two incidents of firing from across the International Border (IB) here in less than a week speak of the neighbouring country's hidden evil intentions and show that it won't turn off the terror tap on its soil. While the tunnel was to serve as an underground infiltration route to avoid armed conflict with the on-ground Indian security personnel, the firing incidents that followed its detection were aimed at facilitating intrusion by militants, a senior BSF officer today said in an informal chat with ET. It had been dug by militants, or the Pak Rangers, or both with the sole purpose of pushing armed ultras into the Indian territory. "Since infiltration is just impossible in view of the barbed wire fencing and multi-layer security bandobast along the IB and the LoC, Pakistan hit upon the plan of digging a tunnel to clandestinely push militants to this side of the border," he added. It was not dug in a day, or two. It must have taken the enemy two to three months to first select the suitable place near BSF's Chilyari outpost in Samba here and then dig the 400 mt long tunnel, he added. In case of its undetection by a farmer whose field had caved-in at two to three places due to rains, it could have been used as an underground infiltration route by militants, the officer said. He said the BSF men were maintaining an untiring vigil all along the IB to foil any infiltration bid by the militants who were desperate to enter J&K to disturb Independence Day celebrations. He said strict instructions had been issued to the border guards to kill anybody who was found sneaking into the Indian territory from across the IB. The officer said the problem of militancy in India "stems from Pakistan's unwillingness to act against terror and close down terror camps on its soil". The Pak claim that it knew nothing about the tunnel, which had its opening on their side of the border, was ridiculous. Even if militants had dug it, they were unable to do so without the active support of Rangers and the Pak administration, he added. This was the second tunnel dug on the border with Pakistan. The first was detected in Punjab. One more tunnel was dug by Pak militants but that was inside the "high-security" Kot-Bhalwal jail here. It was discovered by a guard who had got suspicious on hearing the sound of digging close to the jail's boundary wall and alerted his seniors. It was planned by Moulana Azhar Masood who was later released by India to secure the safety of passengers of the hijacked IA plane that was forced to land at Kandhar. |
