Govt to upgrade fire fighting system in J&K | | | Jammu, Aug 8 : Following inability on the part of the fire services in saving the historic shrine of Dastageer Sahib in Srinagar the state Government has re-framed a multi-crore plan for upgrading fire fighting mechanism in Jammu and Kashmir. Official sources said that under phase one programme the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has approached number of dealers, firms and agencies for procuring and purchasing latest fire fighting equipments. Sources said that though the state have sufficient number of fire fighting vehicles but they ar e ill-equipped for fighting blazes in multistory buildings. Under phase two the Government has decided to upgrade and strengthen fire fighting system and mechanism in and around all major shrines and hospitals besides the two medical colleges and the SIIMS. Indications are that all the major hospitals will be assisted in setting up separate fire fighting units so that during any emergency these units could start fire fighting till the tenders from the state or the district headquarters reach the scene of incident. There are about 100 shrines in Kashmir and over 65 in the Jammu region and each such shrine is being covered by the Government under improved fire fighting devices. Sources said that the Government is keen to upgrade fire fighting system in and around the shrines, hospitals, vital installations and buildings in the context of reports that militants may try to hike the incidents of subversive activities in the state. |
