Farooq, Omar speaking different languages
Pakistan & Army
8/9/2012 12:20:23 AM
Rustam
jammu, Aug 8: Patron of National Conference and Union Minister for Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah and his son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah are speaking different languages. This is not a new phenomenon. Abdullah family is known for speaking differently at different places. It speaks one thing in Kashmir, speaks another in Jammu and quite often takes complete U-turns in New Delhi. They speak the language that suits them. That's the reason the NC has been becoming unpopular with each passing day. However, it can be said that Farooq Abdullah is a mature and shrewd politician and that sometimes he does make points which make people appreciate him and his formulations.
Take, for example, what he said yesterday in New Delhi while addressing armed forces personnel at a function. What he said was a negation of what his son has been saying since years now about Pakistan and the Indian Army. Omar Abdullah is a friend of Pakistan and a critic of Indian Army. In Pakistan, Omar Abdullah had tendered an apology for certain actions his grandfather Sheikh Abdullah had taken concerning Jammu & Kashmir. It happened only some four years ago. He wants to befriend Pakistan at whatever cost. In Kashmir, he consistently takes a line that aims at lowering the morale of the Army and paramilitary forces. In fact, in Kashmir, he says day in and day out that New Delhi must withdraw Army from Kashmir and render the Armed Forces Special Powers Act unreal and ineffective. He believes that the withdrawal of the Army would provide breathing space for the Kashmiri Muslims. This is what the extremists and separatists in Kashmir say on a daily basis.
Compare what Omar Abdullah says about Pakistan and the Indian Army with what Farooq Abdullah said yesterday about Pakistan and the Indian Army and see for yourself the difference. Farooq Abdullah reportedly said: "Our neighbour Pakistan has not learnt till now, I hope it will learn before it is too late. They created a tiger and now can't ride it. And today, the same tiger is eating them up. By supporting a policy of terrorism Pakistan has created problems for itself. We need to wake up if we want to become a great nation. We always say India shining, Go-go India. One billion people and we cannot win an Olympic gold medal, what a shame. And if there had not been the Army shooters we wouldn't have won the silver. Defence-related purchases are slowing down in the country because of fear of corruption allegations and CBI inquiry. After the Bofors mess, people are scared before buying any weapons. There are fears that there will be a CBI inquiry or some probe. The Army must have the best weaponry and there can be no compromise on it. I have seen the day when the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee went to a hospital and spoke to an injured soldier who said he wanted to go back to the border with guns which weigh less and strike farther".
What Farooq Abdullah said could be termed as a brilliant presentation. He said what a responsible Indian citizen is supposed to say. There is no doubt that there will be persons who will say that Farooq Abdullah always plays to the gallery and that he might not be believing in what he said. They can say so because, as said, the Abdullahs are known from speaking differently at different places. But one cannot disagree with what he said about Pakistan, India and the Indian Army. Omar Abdullah has never ever spoken such a language. And, there lies the difference between the father and the son.
