On I-Day eve, Army takes up massive exercise of identifying vulnerable places, suspects | | | Bharat Bhushan jammu, Aug 8: On the eve of Independence Day, Army has taken up the massive exercise of identifying vulnerable places and suspects in the areas that fall along the upper and lower Akhnoor roads here. The jawans of a Jammu-based regiment visited Sarpanchs and some elderly persons in Kot, Kale Gaon and villages close to Tumbar Khoo and spoke to them. At Tumbar Khoo, five militants, who had infiltrated somewhere from the border Kanhachak area, were shot dead by troops in a gunbattle a few years back. These jawans, who were in twos and threes, penned down the details gathered from the villagers on paper sheets and submitted them to their Commanding Officer (CO). Sources in Army said the CO, in turn, would submit these details to his seniors at Tiger Division, Satwari, for necessary action and instructions. On the basis of these details, Army troops would be laying night ambushes in the area. The purpose was to maintain a pressure on subversive elements and "take on militants in case any of them manages to sneak into Indian territory and follows the old infiltration route that passes through Bhalwal block", the sources added. Sources said there were a total of 21 newly identified infiltration routes, besides the old routes. The identification of the 21 new infiltration routes involved a hectic drill undertaken by counter-insurgency (CI) agencies with the help of border dwellers and troops, sources informed. The survey in this regard was carried out by the agencies some time back on the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) in the eight border districts of Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara. Sources said the plugging of new and old routes was done by troops in a very strategic manner to minimise the chances of infiltration. The new strategy was designed in a way that infiltrators (in case they manage to enter India) were likely to walk into the forces' cordons and get killed, he added. Apart from the cordons, additional barriers were also erected and night ambushes laid on all these routes. The barriers were set up for the purpose of checking vehicles and frisking pedestrians. "During these days, militants usually take infiltration routes that pass through less, or zero populated areas," sources said. Some of the newly identified routes passed through Pathri Gali, Sobra Gali, Fugwari and Bachoo in Poonch, Panjtali belt and Gagrian in Jammu, Baber in Samba and Bain nullah in Kathua. These routes had been put under three-tier security. The known infiltration routes here passed through Kanhachak, Vijaypur, Sapwal and Ghati. Security on these routes was also tightened. Sources said extra security arrangements made on the borders would continue till the Independence Day, which is celebrated on August 15 every year, was over. Quoting reports gathered by intelligence agencies, sources said there were at least 25 militant training camps -- 21 along LoC and four along IB. In these camps, hundreds of militants were being trained in the handling of weapons. The management of these camps was under the direct control of the Pak ISI, the sources added. Troops were ready to foil any infiltration bid by militants, sources said. |
