Heads must hang in shame over Sindbal murder | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 8: The clash between two groups of villagers in Sindbal village of Ganderbal district must come as a warning for all of us. While the immediate fallout of the clash has been the death of a village youth, its ramifications could be far reaching unless every responsible citizen of the State wakes up to the new challenge. Apparently the clash has occurred over the use of a Masjid loudspeaker in the village between followers of two different schools of religious thought. But, the stark reality that the same could culminate in the death of a local youth must hang every thinking and responsible head in shame. Religion is the spiritual way of binding not only the followers of one faith, but also those practizing different faiths. After all, there is no doubt that religion is a highly private matter and nobody has the right to question the religious beliefs of others as the same is always done to foment trouble and hatred among followers of different faiths. That the clash in Sindbal village of Ganderbal district which also happens to be the Assembly constituency of the Chief Minister occurred between believers of the same religion is very disturbing. Whether somebody follows this or that practice to offer prayers should not ordinarily have generated tensions in a small village like Sindbal where people have been living in harmony, brotherhood and interdependence for ages. What needs a thorough investigation in addition to bringing those responsible for the youth's murder to justice is who actually sowed so much hatred against each other among otherwise peaceful and God fearing villagers? Whether the same has roots in local politics or in larger religious moorings, the malice needs to be checked quickly and promptly. The State has seen enough bloodshed in the name of separatism during the last 22 years. It cannot afford to see more innocent blood spilled in the name of internecine sectarian violence. Those inciting people to violence either in the name of religion or politics must be immediately identified and isolated. Troubles like the one witnessed in Sindbal have an infectious outreach. This needs to be checked immediately. Unless the evil is nipped in the bud anti-social and anti-national elements can always use the stray incident to incite passions at other places. Whether it is political, religious or sectarian freedom, the lives of innocent citizens are always more important and nobody's religious or political freedom must be allowed to become the death knell for somebody else. Freedom like everything else in a democratic country can never be absolute. Those who used their political over-reach or religious freedom to end the life of a youth in the most condemnable and shameful manner must be dealt with in accordance with the law of the land that brooks no favour or concession to criminals of all hues and colours. |
