| President administers oath to Indian troops on UN peace mission | | | Jammu, Feb 5 The President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam administered a six point oath to over 3500 Indian Army troops proceeding on UN Peace keeping mission in Congo and Sudan, at New Delhi today. The oath stresses on the traditions of the Indian Army and the role of each individual in the peace keeping missions. It reminds the peacekeepers that they represent India, a great nation. It speaks about moral character and regimental coordination. It also emphasizes on the role of the peacekeepers to assist the citizens of the nations in which they are deployed for peace keeping. It concludes by reminding the peacekeepers that the Flag is supreme. Army Chief, Gen JJ Singh assured the President that troops would uphold the oath administered to them. He also said that all troops who would henceforth be proceeding to UN Peace keeping missions will also be administered this oath. The President expressed deep interest in the high standards and quality of the uniforms being made available by the Indian Army to the troops earmarked for UN Peace keeping duties, a handout issued from here today. Maj Gen RPS Malhan of the Army Headquarters gave out the details of the Peace Keeping efforts under the UN banner. Indian Army is currently contributing 8265 troops in five United Nation Missions. HQ 301 Infantry Brigade Group, 15 Martha light Infantry, 1 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, 2 Rajputana Rifles and 9 (Independent) Reece & Observation Flight will be inducted into Congo during March 2007, while 2 Rajput, 7 JAT and 9 Para (special forces) will be inducted into Sudan from mid February 2007. India is the third largest contributor to United Nation Peacekeeping with over 9000 personnel from Army, Police and Para Military Forces. Recently the Indian Army troops deployed in Congo, Sudan and Lebanon have performed commendably and United Nations and the international community have appreciated their contribution, the handout claimed.
