College turns into cantonment after students take on Principal | | | Early Times Report Kathua, Aug 9 : Police were called in after students protest in Government Degree College here assumed violent overtone and protesting students entered into scuffle with the principal. The police were called in by the principal after the students who were protesting under the banner of Progressive Students Association seeking better amenities in the college including College Bus Service facility, Identity Cards, clean toilets, clean drinking water, proper teaching aids , and staff entered into a scuffle with the Principal. Activists of PSA namely Dheeraj Sharma and Sanjay Kumar sat on hunger strike against the undemocratic ways of Principal and alleged unnecessary intervention of the Police in the affairs of the college. The protests started in the college the previous day under the banner of PSA wherein students held a peaceful demonstration in the college to highlight their demands for basic amenities. As the students resumed their protest today, the principal Professor Netar Singh started threatening the protesting students and called in police to thwart the legitimate protest of the students. The state president of PSA expressed shock at the undemocratic and draconian approach of the college administration towards the genuine demands of the students. He said the college administration should solve the genuine problems of the students amicably. Dy SP Daljeet Singh and SHO B.S Manhas intervened personally in the matter and persuaded students to call off the dharna. |
