Govt yet to decide about civic polls | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 9: State government is yet to finalize dates for the civic elections in Jammu and Kashmir which have been already delayed by about two years. Report indicated that the top functionaries had decided to fix the date but the just concluded Amarnath Yatra, bumper tourist traffic to the Kashmir valley and the heavy rush of pilgrims to the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi had restricted the Government as far as finalizing the dates for the civic elections are concerned. Official sources said that sudden upward curve in the militancy related activities and violence and threats issued to the Panches and the Sarpanches of dire consequences if they did not resign have forced the government to delay holding the civic elections. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah too has hinted that municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir may now be held towards the end of the year."We are yet to take a decision on whether elections to municipal bodies, other than the corporations in Jammu and Srinagar, should be conducted or the polls should be altogether deferred," Omar has stated. He has said that the government had plans to hold elections before the onset of tourist season this year but could not do so as the tourist season started much earlier than the schedule. However the Chief Minister has said the elections will be definitely held this year as huge amount of funds under various centrally-sponsored schemes were withheld. "Only the timing of the elections is something which has to be decided," Omar said. The municipal polls in the state were due in 2010 after the term of bodies elected in 2005 ended. |
