Hi-tech media cell unlikely to help BJP in Jammu | No Political Agenda | | Neha jammu, Aug 10: The State unit of the BJP yesterday announced with much fanfare that its media cell went hi-tech. The party president said that this step was taken into account the fact that today's is an era of information technology and it is a must for the party to ensure its presence everywhere. He was right. But it is extremely doubtful if its website, which will be available "soon", will help the State unit of the party in any way. The BJP does need hi-tech media cell, but it also needs many other things. It does need effective organizational machinery. It is true that it has its branches established across the State in general and Jammu Pradesh in particular. But most of them are either dysfunctional or faction-ridden. And most of those who are heading these branches are not men of the masses. They are there through manipulation and lobbying. Besides, most of them hardly undertake any activity. In fact, they remain dormant and devoid of any political activity. But more than that, most of those who are heading these branches, like most of the State-level BJP leaders, are self-centred and over ambitious. This is one crucial area that the State BJP leadership has to take care of. The other important thing which the State BJP leadership needs to do is to adopt a definite Jammu Pradesh-centric political agenda. Its core constituency is Jammu Pradesh. It has little or no presence in Kashmir and Ladakh. It doesn't have any Jammu-specific agenda. There was a time when the BJP used to talk about Jammu empowerment through the instrument of regional development board or adequately empowered regional council, but it abandoned both these planks for reasons best known to its leadership. Look at the party's 2008 election manifesto and you will find that there was nothing whatsoever in it which could induce the people to turn towards it. It did win 11 seats but that was a victory by default. One of the reasons for its victory in 11 Assembly constituencies was that the Hindus had not forgotten the Congress's and the NC's role during the Amarnath land row. The BJP has to come out with a definite Jammu-specific plank and reassure its people that a vote for it would be a vote for empowerment. The State BJP leadership itself is a big problem. Nobody knows who has been leading this party. Nobody knows as to who are the party general secretaries or vice-presidents. It has a number of spokespersons but their problem is that they are not clear about the issues. They issue statements which convey nothing in the real sense of the term. They and other leaders of the party do try to give an emotional touch to their statements, but the people know that the BJP leaders are not committed to what they say. It constitutes a very sad reflection on the BJP. The people are also not happy with the BJP's Kashmir policy. They believe, and rightly so, that the BJP and the Congress are on the same page as far as their attitude towards Kashmir is concerned. Of course, it is true that they have of late started appreciating leaders like Arun Jaitley for their candid reflections on the Kashmir as well as Article 370 and Nehruvian model, but this is not helping the local BJP because it is the local BJP leadership which is on the spot and whose fundamental duty is to take up public-related and nation-related issue on a daily basis and go to the people to enlist their support. It is not happening. And it is unlikely to happen as the local leadership is not only political naïve but also divided. The fact of the matter is that there is crisis of leadership in the party. The BJP has also to overcome this problem and present a united face, along with a definite political programme - programme which could inspire people and put the political opponents on the mat. These are some of the problems the State BJP is face to face with. If it really wishes to galvanize the political situation in its favour, it has to overcome at least these problems and establish by words and actions that it is really committed to the Jammu cause as well as national cause. Merely going hi-tech or holding press conference on a daily basis would be nothing but an exercise in futility and wastage of money. The people of Jammu Pradesh do need an effective alternative, as they are fed up with the Congress for the simple reason that it has always subverted their mandate to keep its Kashmiri bosses on its right side. |
