Media has changed and so should CM | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who hold opinion- and assumes to have knowledge- on every thing from raag Bhairvai to Beetels has an advice for journalist: don't give views and stop paid news. The CM speaking at a function in Srinagar sermonized the media persons about their job and also 'sensitised' about the journalistic ethics. The CM had said that before internet period, people in Srinagar had to wait till afternoon for a copy of national dose of comprehensive news across the nation and world. The point missed by CM in his sermons lies in the above statement. The tone and tenor of journalism had changed much before internet. The journalists gears were shifted with the start of 24X7 electronic news channel. The news as it happens and why it happened is known to people across the nation before editors even hold morning meeting to plan the day. In the changed circumstances, the paper has to go beyond just about the incident. To make reader wait till morning- assuming that more than 20-hr has passed since the incident- it has to provide him or her something on the platter to justify his wait. To beat the instantaneity of the TV the print media has to present views- much different from already discussed in TV studios- the reason for it, how it had happened and pick holes in the system and presents it views on things can be corrected. If this is called as 'views' than the CM should blame the news-channels - which he puts them ahead of the print media and is always ready to oblige a favorite few- than the newpaper. The print media is now facing challenges from the internet sties also which are now competing with the TV channels. In this vicious circle of up-manship, the news paper had to re-orient itself without loosing sight of facts and without sounding opinionated. The times have changed since people would wait for hours to get listen the news on Radio for the latest happening. It has changed even all the news was what Prime Minister said or which public health centre was inaugurated by which Minister. The way political class has shifted from the days of slogans of 'Gharibi Hatao' the journalism too has moved on from reporting what Prime Minister said in his independence day speech. The CM must recognize this role reversal rather than sounding critical. |
