J&K police earn bad name as "senior" cops allegedly attain notoriety for "sexual acts" | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Aug 10: Some "senior" police officers were alleged to have attained notoriety in J&K police administration for their "sexual" acts. Though this was the topic of private discussion among senior officers and other ranks at police headquarters (PHQ), no one ever dared to speak a word against their seniors in public, fearing "disciplinary" action. Reliable sources at PHQ told ET that a "senior" police officer and his subordinate were the two who were mostly being discussed for misusing their official position in this context. This is, however, not the first time that such serious allegations have been levelled against senior police officers. Some state police officers, who faced sexual harassment allegations in the past, had gone unpunished, leaving victims to rue the day they had joined the police force. In J&K, the alleged cases of sexual harassment of women, or lady cops, by senior police officers have never become the focus of attention. While Rathore -- a retired Haryana police chief -- was dragged to court for allegedly molesting a budding tennis player in 1990 and then creating circumstances that drove her to commit suicide, probes in J&K were either left half-way, or dropped. A lady cop underwent severe mental torture for daring to resist the advances of her Commandant (now retired) at the Chhani Himmat-based armed police complex. She and her husband, who too is a cop, had made several complaints to senior police officers, including the then IGP, but no action was initiated against the Commandant. To save her from further harassment, the lady cop was later transferred to the security wing and deployed at the Bhatindi residence of Dr Farooq Abdullah. She had also spoken to this scribe and given a detailed account of her alleged sexual harassment by the Commandant and the mental torture she had undergone. After her transfer, a lady Inspector, who worked in the Commandant's office, had become the victim of his sexual harassment. She too had lodged a written complaint against the Commandant to the IGP. The lady Inspector was mentally so depressed that she had proceeded on leave to avoid meetings with the Commandant for day-to-day official work. She alleged that some lady cops, who were very "close" to the Commandant, carried his "love" messages to her and other victims. In return, the Commandant allowed them to remain absent from duty and use official vehicles for personal works. There were several other complaints of sexual harassment against the Commandant. As the complaints piled up against him, so did his sexual desires. However, all such cases against him were closed after he retired. Another senior police officer also used the similar tactics. Complaints were made against him too. One more senior officer enjoyed the "bad man" reputation in this regard. In a cocktail-dinner held at the police mess here some time back, a "very" senior police officer had made a near successful attempt to pat the wife of his junior. The couple had later left in protest. There are dozens of such cases in J&K. Some were proved, but in many cases the accused went scot free. A victim said she sometimes rued the day she had joined the police force.(Against some police officers) |
