Why has BJP not spoken a word against Jethmalani? | Playing Mischief | | Rustam Jammu, Aug 11: Senior BJP leader and great friend of Kashmiri separatists, Kashmir Committee chairman Ram Jethmalani, along with other well-wishers of Kashmiri secessionists, including Madhu Kishwar, editor of the defunct Manushi, were in Kashmir for two days (August 4 & 5). During those two days, they met with extremists and separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Khan and his wife and university professor Hamida Nayeem and a few others, including some so-called mainstream leaders belonging to the main opposition party. They did not interact with the media this time. But the Kashmir-based media did report what had transpired between them and Kashmiri separatists. What appeared in various newspapers did suggest that they were on a particular mission. People say they visited Kashmir at the behest of the Prime Minister Office (PMO) as track II operatives. What appeared in these reports upset members of the Kashmir Committee, including Kishwar, whom the National Conference (NC) dismissed as a great admirer of the People's Democratic Party's self-rule formula. She was so upset that she wrote a report on their Kashmir visit, which was carried by her own little known magazine Manushi on August 8. She claimed that "their meetings with separatists were not aimed at proposing and 'compromise formula' or any particular solution to any of the leaders as mistakenly reported in several Kashmir papers" and that theirs' was a private visit, which was "not meant to be a media event". Nobody will agree with Kishwar. They were on a mission and it becomes clear from her report on the visit, which, inter-alia, reads: "We came to hear, understand and take guidance on the course of action we need to follow--not to broker a compromise. We share the anguish of the people of Kashmir against the Government of India's complacent attitude towards the problems and aspirations of Kashmiri people. We also share their disappointment with the national media for paying attention to Kashmir only when anger spills out on the streets. We also agree with them that the national media presents a very prejudiced, ill-informed and partisan view of the issues and problems raised by Kashmiris. We are of the view that the Government of India will make the nation pay a heavy price for ignoring the seething anger underneath the surface calm. The situation demands consistent engagement with the people and leaders of Kashmir and a pro-active peace process with Pakistan in order to find a peaceful, democratic and enduring solution to the Kashmir problem". Each and every word that Kishwar used in her report was self-explanatory. Her report revealed more than what the Kashmir papers had reported on August 5 & 6. The report indicated the Kashmir Committee's soft attitude towards the Kashmiri separatists and Pakistan and hatred for some elements in the Indian political establishment who, according to them, have not appreciated the separatist and communal urges of Kashmir-based India baiters. The State BJP leadership which holds press conference or issues press statement almost everyday and talks about Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and his supreme sacrifices did not say a single word against Jethnalani and his team of perverted track-II operatives. It has also not till date made any comment on the report of Kashmir Committee, which is in public domain for the last three days. Why? It appears the State BJP leadership has been directed to keep its mouth shut and not utter a word against such BJP leaders as Ram Jethmalani who have again started poking their dirty nose in the affairs of Jammu & Kashmir to further muddy the Indian waters and promote the cause of Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir. It may maintain silence, but the concerned people in the state, Delhi and elsewhere are keeping a close watch on and monitoring what the BJP has been doing in Jammu & Kashmir, particularly since 1996. It may appear unbelievable, but it is a fact that there are people who consider the BJP "more dangerous, as compared to the Congress and other secular formations". It is for the BJP to make its position clear by making the public aware about what it thinks about Jethmalani & Co. |
