PDP emerges stronger on political horizon of State | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Aug 11: Is People’s Democratic Party (PDP) really emerging stronger in Jammu and Kashmir, answer is yes. Has PDP earned credibility of the people, answer is again in affirmative. The wide-spread perception about Omar Abdullah led coalition Government being a non-starter has, for sure, given an edge to the opposition People’s Democratic Party and its leadership. As for its emergence as party of future, the well attended public meetings of the party across Jammu and Kashmir is an indicator. Though regional parties were emerging as strong political forces across the length and breadth of the country, PDP, however, has a distinction in the sense that it is overweighing centenarian regional political party-the National Conference in Kashmir on one hand and on the other hand expanding its support base in Jammu region. What goes to the advantage of the party is that the people in Jammu and Kashmir have been drawing comparison between Mufti's three years rule from 2002 to 2005 and the rest. And in competitive analysis Mufti's regime is being rated as the first in contemporary times. Though some PDP leaders attribute the popularity of the party to its political agenda, yet the fact remains that it is the governance provided by Mufti that has helped its emergence as a viable alternative in the State. Political commentators are of the opinion that the only reason behind PDP emerging strong is Mufti's three years rule and takers for politics and political agenda are not many. And this has really worked for that party to earn credibility of people. Only the other day Mufti hosted an Iftar party at his Gupkar residence. What was interesting to note was that people from all walks attended the party including a good number of lawyers, academics, businessmen, social and political activists and the media persons. Presence of veteran Marxist MY Tarigami was a big surprise for many including journalists and PDP workers too. The maiden Iftar party has send a strong message that people who are not even remotely connected with the politics drew to Mufti's residence to attend the Iftar party which is, of course very rare in Kashmir. "Mufti regime had not only implemented the agenda of development but also restored peace in the State through its healing touch policy, a senior lawyer told Early Times on the sidelines of the party. "One of the biggest achievement of PDP is that people of Jammu and Kashmir have accepted this party as alternative of National Conference", he said, adding, "it is not the question whether PDP is in the Government or not, it is in itself an achievement that the party has earned credibility of the people. He said that it was all due to the good governance of the PDP led Government that people have reposed their faith in that party. But there are people who attribute the popularity and acceptance of Mufti to his political agenda . "Biggest achievement of PDP was that it had convince both India and Pakistan to take some bold Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to establish lasting peace in this region", said a senior journalist. He said Mufti's comeback is guaranteed provided Delhi not impose its will over the people of the State. He said PDP's aim was not only to attain power but to uphold dignity and honour of the people. He said it was all due to the pro-people policies of the party that it has emerged as strong alternative in the State within a short span of time. Mufti as the leader of his party is keeping the flock together. He has succeeded in forging a strong working relationship between the second-rung leaders and utilizing the potential and capabilities of many heavyweights very intelligently. Mufti of late fully endorsed the view-point of his Srinagar stalwart Tariq Hameed Karra that 2008 elections were managed by Government of India at least in Srinagar city to ensure National Conference's triumph. This has really given a moral boost to Karra who till recent past was keeping low profile. Political Pandits believe if Karra becomes proactive as are the indicators, PDP will certainly take full advantage of anti-incumbency against NC raging high in Srinagar rather in entire Central Kashmir. However, observers do caution PDP about a fallout in at least five to six constituencies if replacement to sitting MLAs is not effected. "No doubt South Kashmir is a strong bastion of PDP and ignorant coalition dispensation has really strengthened the party but there are many sitting MLAs who could not come up to the expectations of their people and PDP leadership has to think twice before repeating them from their respective segments," a veteran social activist told Early Times. According to him bestowing people with credible faces by replacing the incumbents in many constituencies in South is as much required as activating Tariq Kara in Srinagar. With all said and done, Mufti has certainly an edge over the rest, however, developing an understanding with fringe elements rather individual voices like MY Tarigami is also important to keep both NC and Congress at bay. |
