RTI activist forces Sarpanch to refund swindled IAY money | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 12: After being exposed by an RTI activist, a Sarpanch and his associates have refunded the fraudulently swindled money meant for housing of rural poor in central Kashmir's Budgam district, sources said. As reported earlier, the Sarpanch and Deputy sarp anch at Kutabal Jeddan village of Chadoora Tehsil had managed to swindle money under Indra Awas Yojana (IAY) of Rural Development Department by benefiting at least two dozen of their relatives under the scheme. The scam was exposed after Fayaz Ahmad Wani, an RTI activist had filed an inquiry with the Block Development Officer Chadoora. The Sarpanch Muhammad Aslam Thakar and the Deputy Sarpanch Abdul Ahad Khan have deposited Rs 5.33 lakh into the Government treasury as they feared of getting arrested, sources said . The RTI applicant has also filed a case in Special Anti Corruption Court, which has asked the Vigilance Organization to probe into this matter. " I am very happy to see that RTI has worked and the Sarpanch has paid Rs 5.33 lakh back into Government account , this is not my victory but the victory of RTI , and poor people , I appeal people to use this law and expose the corrupt elements of the society" said Fayaz Ahmad, the RTI activist. |
