Govt to introduce five-year programme on weapon modernization | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 12: Notwithstanding the fact that the security forces have been able to recover 30,000 assault rifles, 11000 pistols and revolvers from the militants in Jammu and Kashmir, state government has formulated a five-year plan for equipping the police with latest weapons and ammunition. Official sources said that no doubt all the assault rifles, pistols and revolvers, seized from militants, had been given to the security forces there was still the need for providing to police personnel the modern weapons to take on militants who have been seen crossing into Jammu and Kashmir with sophisticated weapons. Sources said that the government plans to give cash incentives to those former militants and others who help the security agencies in recovering weapons that had been used by the insurgents during the last several years. This huge cache of weapons, recovered from militants, has become part of modernization of weaponry. Sources said that no doubt the union Home Ministry has cleared a project aimed at modernization and up gradation of weapons in the police department the police authorities believe that in case more weapons were recovered and seized from the militants and their underground workers the police could be equipped with effective weapons for tackling the activities of rebels. Apart from equipping police personnel in Jammu and Kashmir with sophisticated weapons and other gadgets the Government has decided to make training of men in khaki in the handling of latest weapons and other gadgets a regular feature. Police authorities favour equipping men of the police with weapons that are usually handled by the Army and paramilitary forces personnel. |
