Govt shelves much talked about Sharda University proposal | | | Early Times Report Jammu Aug 11: The State Government has shelved the much talked about proposal of setting up of Sharda University in Kashmir valley which was mooted earlier in 2006-2007. According to the sources, the proposal was mooted by former Governor Lt. Gen S.K. Sinha and some intellectuals of the State way back in 2006-2007 and survey was also conducted for identification of land in Kashmir Valley. Even some people had agreed to sell their land to Government for this purpose in South Kashmir district Anantnag incase the Government land was not available, sources added. Sources said the Government had at that time surveyed the State land in Badgam district of Central Kashmir where hundreds Kanals of state land was indentified. The Governer as head of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has agreed that Board will set up the Sharda University in Valley as the same would be a great service to Kashmir and Kashmiri's, Sources added. Sources said the former vice chancellor Jammu University Amitabh Matoo as also among the Kashmiri intellectuals who showed keen interest in setting up of the University to restore the composite culture of Kashmir. These intellectuals had discussed the issue with cross section of Kashmiri people and the prominent people in majority community had also shown their willingness for the same. After surveying land in various districts of Kashmir valley including Anantnag, Baramulla and Badgam, the team of intellectuals had preferred the state land of Budgam for setting up the university. Even some Kashmiri Pandit intellectuals were also taken in confidence by the group of intellectuals who were entrusted by Lt. Gen Sinha to identify the land, sources added. Sources said as the proposal was to be given a practical shape Lt. Gen Sinha's term ended and the new incumbent to the office on the instance of the ruling alliance shelved the project, despite the fact that various organizations in the state are hard processing for the same. Sources said that some intellectual groups from outside the Country have also approached the Government to review the project but in vain. In their plea to State Government these intellectuals had said that setting up of the university would help in revival of Sharda culture as well. It may be recalled that Sharda was the ancient university in Kashmir during the medieval period where besides India, students from South Asian Countries used to come for higher studies. The University was situated adjacent to Sharda temple at Athmuqam on the banks of river Madhumati in Neelam valley presently in PoK. |
